Russian President Vladimir Putin has upped the ante on any foreign intervention in its war on Ukrain

Russian President Vladimir Putin has upped the ante on any foreign intervention in its war on Ukraine by saying that the imposition of any no-fly zones over Ukraine by a third party would amount to participation in the war. His warning came even as NATO said it would not be attempting to impose a no-fly zone after Ukrainian requests for one. A no-fly zone prevents any unauthorised aircraft from entering a defined airspace. If NATO imposes a military no-fly zone over Ukraine, it would mean that the organisation will have to challenge and even shoot down Russian aircraft entering Ukrainian airspace. NATO has denied Ukrainian requests for such a role as it would mean entering into direct military conflict with Russia, which will have consequences in wider Europe. Since Ukraine is not a NATO country, NATO is not obliged to intervene as well. This exchange came amidst a day of relatively lighter fighting on Saturday, though both sides blamed each other for the conflict continuing. Russia alleged that Ukraine was not coming to the negotiating table while Ukraine claimed that Russia has breached the ceasefire in two cities meant to enable civilian evacuation. Meanwhile, refugees continued to stream out of cities in the thousands. The hedging by NATO and the hectoring by Russia amid the ongoing humanitarian crisis is what makes the story important.
