India on Saturday abstained from voting on a United Nations Security Council resolution that condemn

India on Saturday abstained from voting on a United Nations Security Council resolution that condemned Russia for its moves on Ukraine and called for an immediate halt to the violence and for withdrawal of forces. India joined China and the UAE as the only countries to abstain from voting on the resolution co-sponsored by 80 countries. The resolution failed after Permanent Member Russia vetoed it. In the justification of its move, India called for respecting the sovereignty of nations, which is a counter to Russia’s argument of parts of Ukraine being “historical Russia”. Speaking to The Hindu, sources in the government said that this was India taking a stronger stand, even as it retained the option of talking to both sides by abstaining from voting. India also raised the issue of its citizens, primarily students, who are caught up in the situation in Ukraine, as a justification for abstaining from voting. Expressing Ukraine’s disappointment with India’s vote, the country’s ambassador to the UN said that the safety of citizens was exactly the reason that India should have voted for the resolution. India’s vote is not entirely on unexpected lines considering the historical closeness with Russia. But it does draw lines among the international community on who stands where on what is being seen as Russian aggression. This is what makes the story important. Was this newsletter forwarded to you?
