The Nationalist Congress Party leader Nawab Malik was arrested on Wednesday by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a money laundering case. Malik was questioned by the central agency for over six hours after ED officials reached his residence at 7 am. He will soon be produced before the special prevention of money laundering act court. He walked out of the ED office sloganeering, “We will fight, we will win and we will expose everyone” in Hindi. The case involves alleged land and money transactions between the underworld don Dawood Ibrahim and the minister for minority development and aukaf of Maharashtra. On February 18, a special court remanded Dawood’s brother Iqbal Kaskar to ED custody for seven days in the same case. The ED’s case is based on a FIR filed by the National Investigation Agency on February 3 this year against Dawood, who has been designated as a ‘Global Terrorist’ by the United Nations and also listed under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act for being involved in terrorist activities. Those who speak the truth are being harassed, says Sharad Pawar Nationalist Congress Party leaders threw their weight behind Maharashtra Minority Affairs Minister Nawab Malik, who was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on Wednesday following a gruelling interrogation in connection with a money laundering case. Earlier, NCP chief Sharad Pawar rebuked the BJP-led Central government, remarking that Malik was being harassed for being vocal against the Centre’s misuse of central agencies and that there was “nothing surprising” about the interrogation. Following Malik’s arrest, a meeting between Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, Pawar and State Home Minister Dilip Walse-Patil was scheduled to take place at Thackeray official residence ‘Varsha’ later today evening. The BJP has called for Malik’s resignation, with BJP State president Chandrakant Patil stating that the NCP leader had no moral claim to being part of the State cabinet now. Earlier, the leadership of the tripartite Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government [of the Shiv Sena, the NCP and the Congress] lashed out at the BJP with Pawar spearheading the verbal charge. “We were certain that something like this would happen soon. Nawab Malik had been outspoken against the Centre and its misuse of agencies…Those who express their views openly against the BJP government and the investigating agencies, those who speak the truth, are being harassed,” said the NCP chief. He further said that it was very easy (for the Centre) to invoke Dawood Ibrahim’s name particularly in regards to a Muslim party activist against whom some old case will be dug up by the agencies. “It is easy to link a Muslim [political] worker with Dawood [Ibrahim]. I also faced similar allegations when I was Chief Minister of Maharashtra. An environment was created [against me] which lasted for some 25 years… Link people with a name, harass and defame them by misusing power. The same is happening in this case,” Pawar said. NCP State president and Maharashtra Minister Jayant Patil said that Malik had been taken from his residence at around 6 a.m. by the ED without any notice being served on him. “This has now become a familiar pattern which began with the ED targeting Anil Deshmukh and other ministers of the MVA government. But the NCP stands firmly behind Malik,” said Patil. A massive throng of NCP activists and Malik’s supporters gathered outside the ED office, raising slogans in support of the minister and against the Central government as security was beefed up. Supriya Sule, the NCP MP from Baramati, said that the ED interrogation was hardly surprising given Malik’s vocal stance against the Centre. “For the last few months, we [NCP leaders] have frequently been given such threats [of probes by the ED or other central agency] by their [BJP] leaders on social media platforms like Twitter…Given that Nawab Malik was conducting one expose after another, it was anticipated that he would soon be troubled by a central agency. It is unfortunate that Maharashtra’s politics have come down to such a level,” said Sule. Following Malik’s arrest later in the day, Congress MP Husain Dalwai said that the BJP was indulging in “the politics of malice”. “This is a party [BJP] that is groomed on the hate of Nathuram Godse [Mahatma Gandhi’s assassin]. Nothing else can be expected from this party,” said Dalwai. Calling Malik’s interrogation “a deliberate challenge” to the stability of the ruling MVA government, Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut said the BJP’s misuse of central agencies would not last beyond the 2024 Lok Sabha election, which would see a change at the Centre. NCP Rajya Sabha MP Majeed Menon questioned whether the ED probe was being conducted following BJP Leader of Opposition Devendra Fadnavis’ allegations against the NCP leader. “It appears the ED probe is being done at the behest of Mr. Fadnavis… This is the same ED which had summoned Pawar himself, but had quickly backed down. Moreover, had the ED any evidence against Malik, they ought to have conducted it quietly rather than propagating it on all television channels… secrecy is the hallmark of a fair investigation,” said Menon, questioning why the ED had woken up after 17 years to dig up a 2005 case against Malik. Last year, it was Fadnavis who had alleged that Malik had apparently struck a property deal with 1993 Mumbai bomb blast convict Sardar Shahwali Khan and Mohd Salim Ishaq Patel, said to be the ‘frontman’ of Haseena Parkar, Dawood Ibrahim’s sister. Malik’s interrogation is one of a long line of crackdowns by central agencies which began with former State Home Minister Anil Deshmukh and included MVA leaders like the NCP’s Ajit Pawar and the Shiv Sena’s Anil Parab, Sanjay Raut and Pratap Sarnaik among others. Russia-Ukraine conflict: Moody’s says global oil, natural gas prices may see sharp rise Malik’s interrogation is one of a long line of crackdowns by central agencies which began with former State Home Minister Anil Deshmukh and included MVA leaders like the NCP’s Ajit Pawar and the Shiv Sena’s Anil Parab, Sanjay Raut and Pratap Sarnaik among others. Global oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) prices are likely to see a sharp rise in the event of a Russia-Ukraine conflict, which would have negative implications for net energy importers, Moody’s Investors Service said on Wednesday. Moody’s Investors Service Managing Director Michael Taylor said trade effects are likely to arise from import diversion and diversification, although there may be opportunities for commodities producers in Central Asia to increase supply to China. Supply chain bottlenecks will also be aggravated, adding to inflation pressures in the region. Tensions have been escalating between Ukraine and Russia in recent weeks, and on Monday Moscow decided to recognise two separatist regions of eastern Ukraine as independent and deployed Russian troops there. “The global price of oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) is likely to rise sharply in the event of a conflict, which will be positive for the relatively few exporters in the Asia Pacific region and negative for the substantially greater number of net energy importers. “However, a mitigating factor is that several Asian economies have long-term supply contracts in place for LNG, which will limit the impact of fluctuations in the spot price,” Taylor said. Global crude oil benchmark Brent neared the $100 per barrel on Tuesday amid rising threat of invasion in Ukraine and fears of sanctions on Russia, the largest exporter of natural gas and second-largest oil exporter. India imports about 85% of its crude oil needs and about half of its natural gas requirement. While the imported crude oil is turned into fuels such as petrol and diesel, gas is used as CNG in automobiles and fuel in factories. In a statement, Moody’s said its rated issuers in the Asia-Pacific have limited direct exposure to Russian or Ukrainian entities. Nonetheless, issuers in APAC may not be immune to second-round effects of a conflict. Among the possible transmission channels are commodities prices, trade effects and financial market disruption. “Financial market effects will have the largest near-term impact: for example, if a conflict gives rise to widespread risk aversion, funding conditions for high yield issuers, some of which are already experiencing constrained access to finance due to other factors, will deteriorate further,” Moody’s said. “Financial market effects will have the largest near-term impact: for example, if a conflict gives rise to widespread risk aversion, funding conditions for high yield issuers, some of which are already experiencing constrained access to finance due to other factors, will deteriorate further,” Moody’s said. Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections: Fourth phase: 57.45% voting recorded till 5 p.m. An average of 57.45% polling was recorded till 5 p.m. on Wednesday in 59 Assembly constituencies during the fourth of the seven-phase elections in Uttar Pradesh, according to the Election Commission. As many as 624 candidates are in the fray in this round of voting being held in Pilibhit, Lakhimpur Kheri, Sitapur, Hardoi, Unnao, Lucknow, Rae Bareli, Banda, and Fatehpur districts. The polling started at 7 a.m. and ended at 6 p.m. According to the Election Commission of India, Pilibhit recorded 61.33% votes, Kheri 62.42%, Sitapur 58.39%, Hardoi 55.29%, Unnao 54.05%, Lucknow 55.08%, Rae Bareli 58.40%, Banda 57.54% and Fatehpur 57.02%. Around 73.67% of votes were cast till 5 p.m. in polling station number 266 of the Karhal Assembly segment in Mainpuri district where a repolling has been ordered by the Election Commission. Among the prominent candidates in this phase are Uttar Pradesh Law Minister Brijesh Pathak, SP’s national spokesperson Anurag Bhadauria, former SP minister Abhishek Mishra, former Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly deputy speaker Nitin Agarwal and Aditi Singh. Supreme Court dismisses plea against offline Board exams for classes X, XII Among the prominent candidates in this phase are Uttar Pradesh Law Minister Brijesh Pathak, SP’s national spokesperson Anurag Bhadauria, former SP minister Abhishek Mishra, former Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly deputy speaker Nitin Agarwal and Aditi Singh. The Supreme Court on Wednesday dismissed a plea to persuade authorities from holding physical exams for classes 10 and 12 in 2022 because of the pandemic. A Bench led by Justice AM Khanwilkar termed the petition “ill-advised” and “premature”. “Let students do their job and authorities do theirs... What kind of a petition is this? This will only create confusion,” Justice Khanwilkar addressed advocate Prashant Padmanabhan, appearing for the petitioner, Anubha Shrivastava Sahai. Padmanabhan said the apex court had cancelled the physical exams last year and directed the authorities to devise an alternate assessment mechanism. The danger of a spike in cases has not passed yet though the COVID–19 situation has improved, he argued. He urged the court to pass similar orders like last year. “The past cannot be the basis for passing orders in the present. We know we had passed orders, but that was reflective of the situation then and not now,” Justice Khanwilkar responded. The Bench said there are rules and regulations in place to deal with the conduct of exams in the pandemic situation. “They are working on it. But you have filed your PIL even before they have taken a decision...” Justice Khanwilkar said. The court said once the authorities take a decision on the conduct of exams, it was for the students, and not others, to seek relief in case they have a grievance. “But you cannot come here even before authorities take a decision,” Justice Khanwilkar told the petitioner side. Padmanabhan said the classes were not conducted properly and were mostly online. He also said some States have elections. “Do you think the authorities do not know? They are more aware than you are about all that,” Justice Khanwilkar reacted. The petition had challenged the conduct of physical exams by the CBSE, the ICSE and the State boards. The CBSE has decided to conduct term two board exams for class 10 and class 12 from April 26. The petition had also sought the setting up of a committee to finalise the formula for assessment of marks of class 12 students, fix a timeline for declaration of the results and declare the date for admission into various universities. Covid Watch: Numbers and Developments The petition had also sought the setting up of a committee to finalise the formula for assessment of marks of class 12 students, fix a timeline for declaration of the results and declare the date for admission into various universities.
