Chandrashekhar Rao on Monday held special prayers at the famous Sri Ranganatha Swamy temple at Srirangam in Tiruchirappalli in Tamil Nadu, a day before his meeting with his TN counterpart M. K. Stalin. Describing Stalin his "best friend", Rao said he would meet the TN CM on Tuesday. 2. Mumbai Cong president moves HC for govt nod to party rally at Shivaji Park Mumbai Congress president Bhai Jagtap on Monday moved the Bombay High Court with a plea seeking a direction to the Maharashtra government to grant permission for the party's scheduled rally at the Shivaji Park in central Mumbai on December 28. Jagtap, in the plea, said an application was submitted to the state government in October 2021, seeking permission to hold the rally where Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi have been invited to address the gathering. 3. Trial of Park Street rape accused not to be held till Friday: Cal HC The Calcutta High Court on Monday directed that trial of the main accused in a 2012 gang rape case in the city's Park Street be not taken up for hearing by the lower court till December 17. The key accused moved the high court challenging a lower court order disallowing cross-examination of some witnesses by his lawyer. 4. 8 lakh ladoo packets to be distributed in Varanasi to celebrate Kashi Vishwanath Corridor opening To celebrate the inauguration of the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor, the district authorities here and the Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple Trust will distribute 8 lakh packets of ladoos across the city, according to officials. While the target is to distribute all packets on Monday, but given the enormity of the task, the distribution may spill over to Tuesday, the officials said. 5. Doctors strike affects functioning of medical colleges in Kerala The government medical colleges across Kerala faced a severe crisis on Monday due to the continuing strike of PG doctors raising various demands. The protest, on for the last four days, was against the State government’s alleged failure in fulfilling their demands, including restoration of the 4 per cent annual salary hike of resident doctors. 6. HC postpones Odisha film award programme amid row The Orissa High Court on Monday postponed the state film award ceremony scheduled to be held on December 14 and directed re-evaluation of all entries selected for the programme. The order came on a writ petition by director Bobby Islam who contended that his film was not on the final list of the 31st Odisha State Film Awards, despite being an original movie. 7. Kashmir cold wave intensifies The cold wave in Kashmir has intensified with the mercury settling several notches below the freezing point, officials said on Monday. Srinagar recorded a low of minus 3.5 degrees Celsius on Sunday night – down by 0.5 degrees from the previous night. It was the second coldest night of the season so far, the officials said. 8. Britain reports world's first known Omicron variant death British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Monday confirmed the UK’s first death from the Omicron variant of coronavirus, probably the first known fatality from the highly transmissible variant of COVID-19 in the world. The news of the UK's first fatality came on a day when Health Secretary Sajid Javid warned that the Omicron variant is "spreading at a phenomenal rate" and infections are continuing to double every two to three days. 9. Nepali Congress votes to elect new leadership The Nepali Congress delegates voted on Monday to elect a new president of the ruling party for the next four years. The voting, originally scheduled to begin at 8 AM, started at 11.30 AM due to some technical reason, according to party officials. The result is likely to be declared on Tuesday. 10. Data Patterns raises Rs 176 cr from anchor investors ahead of IPO Data Patterns (India) Ltd, which supplies electronic systems to the defence and aerospace sector, on Monday said it has collected Rs 176 crore from anchor investors ahead of its IPO rollout on Tuesday. The company has allotted 30.16 lakh equity shares to anchor investors at Rs 585 apiece, aggregating the transaction size to Rs 176.46 crore, according to a circular uploaded on the BSE website. 11. Hockey: New cycle starts as Indian men take on Korea in Asian Champions Trophy Olympic bronze medallist Indian men's hockey team will start its new cycle with a bunch of youngsters aiming to prove their mettle when it begins its Asian Champions Trophy campaign against Korea on Tuesday.
