Congress says Rahul to lead party delegation to Lakhimpur, seeks U.P. government’s approval The Congress on Tuesday said its former president Rahul Gandhi will lead a five-member party delegation to Lakhimpur Kheri on Wednesday, and asked Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to allow the visit. Party sources in Delhi said Rahul Gandhi is keen to visit there on Wednesday, days after his sister and AICC general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was detained by the Uttar Pradesh Police while on her way to Lakhimpur Kheri, where eight people died and several injured Sunday in the bloodiest clash since the farmers' protest over the Centre's agri laws began last year. 2. President Kovind on 3-day tour of Karnataka President Ram Nath Kovind will visit Karnataka from October 6 to 8, a statement issued by the Rashtrapati Bhavan said on Tuesday. On October 7, the President will inaugurate the newly-built teaching hospital of the Chamarajanagar Institute of Medical Sciences at Chamarajanagar, it said. 3. PM to virtually address event on rural land ownership scheme Prime Minister Narendra Modi will virtually address a programme to be attended by the beneficiaries of a central scheme on establishing land ownership in rural areas in Harda district of Madhya Pradesh on Wednesday, State Minister Kamal Patel said on Monday. The Pradhan Mantri Swamitva Yojna is a scheme towards establishment of clear ownership of property in rural areas by mapping of land parcels using drone technology and providing ‘record of rights’ to eligible households by issuing legal ownership cards to them. 4. Favourable conditions for start of monsoon withdrawal from NW India on Wed: IMD Conditions remain favourable for the commencement of withdrawal of the Southwest Monsoon from some parts of northwest India from Wednesday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. This is the second-most delayed withdrawal of the Southwest Monsoon since 1960. In 2019, monsoon withdrawal from northwest India started on October 9, according to R. K. Jenamani, senior forecaster with the National Weather Forecasting Centre of the IMD. 5. India, Japan 3-day bilateral maritime exercise from tomorrow The fifth edition of India–Japan Maritime Bilateral Exercise, JIMEX, between the Indian Navy and the Japan Maritime Self-Defence Force, will be held in Arabian Sea from Wednesday, a Defence spokesman said. Indigenously built Guided Missile Stealth Destroyer Kochi and Guided Missile Frigate Teg, under the command of Rear Admiral Ajay Kochhar, Flag Officer Commanding Western Fleet, will represent the Indian Navy in the three-day exercise, the spokesperson said on Tuesday. The Japanese Maritime Self-Defence Force will be represented by JMSDF ships Kaga, an Izumo Class Helicopter Carrier and Murasame, a Guided Missile Destroyer, led by Rear Admiral IkeuchiIzuru, Commander Escort Flotila - 3 (CCF-3), the spokesman said in a statement. 6. Supreme Court asks Centre about exercise undertaken to justify quota in promotions for SCs/STs The Supreme Court Tuesday asked the Centre as to what exercise it has undertaken to justify decisions to grant quota in promotions to the employees belonging to the Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) on counts such as they have inadequate representation in jobs and the reservation will not adversely impact the overall administrative efficiency. Attorney General K. K. Venugopal, appearing for the Centre, said that Article 16 of the Constitution requires equality in matters of public employment and if merit alone is the criteria, then the SCs and STs, who are disadvantaged socially, might not be able to compete. The court will continue the hearing on Wednesday. 7. Maharashtra: 15,000 devotees to be allowed per day at Shirdi Saibaba temple At least 15,000 devotees who possess online passes will be allowed to entry on a daily basis at the Saibaba temple in Shirdi in Maharashtra's Ahmednagar district, a senior district official said on Tuesday. As places of worship in the State are slated to reopen from October 7, a meeting of the district administration and the management of Shri Saibaba Sansthan Trust was organised to chalk out measures, the official said. 8. Chief Minister dashboard launched in Karnataka, in line with the PMO Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Tuesday launched "CM Dashboard", that is said to be in line with the Prime Minister's Office, which facilitates him to review progress of various Departments on a digital platform. This dashboard will provide up to date information about various projects to the Chief Minister, his office said in a release. Mr. Bommai directed officials to record accurate information on the dashboard. 9. U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Sherman begins 3-day India visit; to hold talks with FS Shringla U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman and Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla will hold extensive talks on Wednesday with the focus expected to be on the situation in Afghanistan and ways to take forward bilateral ties in key areas. Sherman arrived here on Tuesday on a three-day visit, nearly two weeks after Prime Minister Narendra Modi held talks with U.S. President Joe Biden in Washington. 10. Play-off berth secured, RCB eye SRH scalp to remain in top-2 fray Assured of a play-off berth, Royal Challengers Bangalore would look to inch closer to a top two finish in the league stage when they play Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL on Wednesday. Eyeing their first IPL title triumph, RCB are currently placed third in the pecking order with 16 points from 12 games. Delhi Capitals are leading the standings ahead of Chennai Super Kings. 11. Hockey India withdraws from 2022 Birmingham CWG; cites COVID concerns, discriminatory quarantine rules India on Tuesday pulled out of next year's Birmingham Commonwealth Games' hockey competition, citing COVID-19 concerns and UK's discriminatory quarantine rules for travellers from the country, a day after England's withdrawal from the junior men's World Cup in Bhubaneswar over similar reasons.
