Channi to take oath as Punjab CM The All India Congress Committee on September 19 announced 58-year-old Charanjit Singh Channi as the leader of Punjab Congress Legislature Party, who would be State’s next Chief Minister. “After Congress Legislature Party’s unanimous decision, we met the Governor and presented our claim to form the government. Governor has assigned a time slot of 11 a.m. on September 20 for the oath taking ceremony,” said Mr Channi, who is set to become the first Dalit Chief Minister of Punjab. 2. SC to hear Centre's plea against Madras HC observation on EWS quota in medical admissions The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear on Monday the Centre's plea against the Madras High Court's observation that the notification on grant of 10 per cent quota to the economically weaker sections in all-India quota seats of medical colleges would require approval of the top court. While disposing of the contempt plea of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam against the Centre, the Madras High Court, on August 25, had approved the July 29 notification of the central government providing 27 per cent reservation to OBC (other backward classes) candidates for admission in central medical colleges under the all-India quota. 3. Serbian Foreign Minister Nikola Selakovic scheduled to call on Venkaiah Naidu India and Serbia agreed to deepen economic engagement during "fruitful" talks between External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and his Serbian counterpart Nikola Selakovic. The Serbian foreign minister is in Delhi on a two-day visit. Mr. Selakovic is scheduled to call on Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu on Monday before leaving for Doha. 4. Babul Supriyo to meet Mamata Former Union minister and BJP MP Babul Supriyo, who switched over to West Bengal's ruling TMC in a surprise move, on Sunday said life has now opened a new avenue for him from the prospect of being "retired hurt" from public affairs not so long ago. He will meet TMC supremo and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday, senior party leader and MP Saugata Roy said. The singer-turned-politician said he will leave for Delhi early next week to tender his resignation to the Lok Sabha Speaker as MP from Asansol. 5. New Gujarat CM to meet President, VP, PM in Delhi Newly-appointed Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel is scheduled to meet President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his one-day visit to Delhi on Monday, the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) said. Mr. Patel will pay a courtesy call on Mr. Kovind and Mr. Naidu for the first time after assuming the top post in the state, the CMO said in a statement. 6. Trudeau makes final appeal ahead of Canada's election Canadian elections headed for a photo finish Monday with liberal prime minister Justin Trudeau, who is seeking a third term, threatened by a strong challenge from rookie conservative leader Erin O'Toole. Polls indicate Mr. Trudeau's Liberal Party is in a close race with the rival Conservatives and that it is unlikely on Monday to get the outright majority needed to govern without relying on an opposition party to remain in power. 7.
