UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP chief J.P. Nadda on what

UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP chief J.P. Nadda on what sources said were issues regarding "governance and the coming Assembly polls next year." The UP CM was apparently asked to "take everyone along" in the party and the government. The meetings are being seen as an attempt to shore up the BJP's prospects in UP ahead of the election and could also be linked to an upcoming Cabinet reshuffle at the Centre. There is a perception that the BJP's chances of returning to power in UP next year may have diminished amid the COVID-19 crisis. In an indication of unease among the party's allies in UP, several of them had met Amit Shah recently. There has been a flurry of meetings between the PM and party chief Mr. Nadda too, with hints of a Cabinet reshuffle at the Centre and at the State levels to accommodate some of the allies. U.P. is the foundation on which much of BJP's electoral success is built, and it is a bellwether State in national politics. Home to PM Modi's constituency Varanasi and connected to several of BJP's key ideological platforms, it is imperative for the party that it retains the State. However, the central leadership also needs to take along CM Adityanath who is a power centre in his own right. The Centre's strategies for UP cannot be far removed from Mr. Adityanath's own plans and our reports indicate that the final settlement reached yesterday favours the CM. This internal tussle in the BJP and the question whether the BJP indeed is on sticky wicket in UP are what make this story important.
