The Hindu Newsletter - Newsletter - subject [The Hindu Logo]( [Facebook]( [Twitter]( [Youtube]( [Linkedin]( [Instagram]( Monday 25, January 2021 [alt_text]( Editor's Pick Chinese incursions caught on video [alt_text]( (The Editor's Pick is a new newsletter from The Hindu that provides a snapshot of the most important stories from today's edition of our newspaper, along with a note from our top editors on why we chose to give prominence to these stories.) [Videos taken by a village headman]( from Ladakh shows Chinese civilians and vehicles [trespassing on Indian roads](, even as [military-level talks continue between the two countries]( on resolving the border issue. The videos taken on December 10 and 16, 2020 by Urgain Tsewang of Koyul, one of the last settlements in the Demchok sector, show [Chinese vehicles being turned back by local officials](and Chinese civilians taking photographs of the locals. Mr. Tsewang told The Hindu that the Chinese were first spotted on December 10 about 1 km into Indian territory. The local officials and personnel from the Indo Tibetan Border Police were waiting for them when they returned on Dec 16 and turned them back. This points to consistent efforts by the Chinese to infiltrate into Indian territory [south of the Pangong Tso lake](. At the Pangong Tso, the Chinese have moved [8 km into Indian territory](, denying Indian soldiers access to several of the 'finger' geographical formations around the lake that they had access to earlier. North of the Pangong Tso too, the Chinese have denied Indian troops access to several ['patrolling points'](that mark what India considers the limit of its territory on the LAC. This is the latest example of increased Chinese activity on the LAC since early 2020, which led to the Galwan clash in June [that killed 20 Indian soldiers.]( The Hindu is reporting on the civilian incursions in Demchok a day after India and China held the ninth round of Corps Commander level talks to resolve the standoff at the border. These Chinese attempts to create 'facts on the ground' do not portend well for the prospect of a negotiated settlement that appreciates India's definition of the LAC. This is what makes the story important. Was this newsletter forwarded to you? Head over to our newsletter subscription page to sign up for Editor's Pick and more.
