The Hindu Newsletter - Newsletter - subject [The Hindu Logo]( [Facebook]( [Twitter]( [Youtube]( [Linkedin]( [Instagram]( Friday 30, October 2020 [alt_text]( Editor's Pick [Islamist terrorism strikes again in France]( [alt_text]( (The Editor's Pick is a new newsletter from The Hindu that provides a snapshot of the most important stories from today's edition of our newspaper, along with a note from our top editors on why we chose to give prominence to these stories.) A man believed to be an Islamist terrorist from Tunisia killed three people, including a [woman who was beheaded](, at a church in Nice, France. The killings come weeks after a similar beheading near Paris of a school teacher who had shown controversial caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed to his students. In the wake of that killing, French President Immanuel Macron had defended the right to show the cartoons, and they were publicly displayed at many places in France. The cartoons are the trigger for ongoing protests in many Muslim-majority countries against France, a call to boycott French products, and a stand-off with Turkey. The caricatures have been a boiling issue in France ever since they were published by the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in 2015. It led to an attack on the magazine office that killed 12 journalists. In September, Charlie Hebdo had republished the cartoon ahead of the trial of 14 persons charged with supporting the attack. This had triggered the protests in several Muslim-majority countries, now flamed by France's defence of the cartoons after the school teacher's killing. Amid this Turkey's Recep Tayyip Erdogan, already [at loggerheads with Mr. Macron](, has positioned himself as the rallying point for the protests. The French reaction has been to fast forward a plan to regulate the practice of Islam in the country, which includes certifications for Imams and closer scrutiny of funding for mosques. The terrorist attacks in Nice and Paris add to the list of terrorist attacks by Islamist fundamentalists in Europe over the years. The attacks have also turned into an international geopolitical issue with Turkey's involvement and several countries taking stands. India has also expressed support to France after the attacks. These factors are what make this story important.
