If you don't have hot pickups and choose your gain with the ears instead of the eyes then it will not clip. What you then could get is more "travel way" on the gain knob - which is what one might strive for. Don't get me wrong turning the PreEQ -12dB and then just choosing a higher gain will work perfectly well - but IMHO it isn't the perfect solution for anything...
