The Gear Page Weekly Update - Trending Threads: Guitars And Short Stature Medically speaking, if you

The Gear Page Weekly Update - Trending Threads: Guitars And Short Stature Medically speaking, if you’re less that 5’5” or 165cm (which is more than 2 standard deviations below the mean) you can consider yourself short. I’m 165cm, so it’s official, I’m short. Surely there’s a better, less demeaning word for it? I’m in the 8th percentile, which means 92 out of 100 guys are gonna be taller than me. I don’t really give it much thought. However, I listened to an interesting podcast episode this week of “This American Life”, which highlighted how much value people attribute to stature. So much so that it’s not uncommon for wealthy people to stick their slightly below average height kids on growth hormones, in the hope that they’ll have successful adult lives - earn more money, have more influence, attract a partner... all by being a little taller. In the spirit of self acceptance, I started thinking about guitarists who are on the short side. Please feel free to add any more you can think of (to be inclusive, let’s go with 5’6” or 167.5cm or less). Suzi Quatro 5’0” Angus Young 5’2” Prince 5'2" Malcolm Young 5’3” Paul Kossoff 5’3” Paul Simon 5’3” Nils Lofgren 5’3” Sheryl Crow 5’3” Rick Derringer 5’4” Marty McFly 5’4” Stevie Ray Vaughan 5'5" Thom Yorke 5’5” Steve Stevens 5’5” Marc Bolan 5’5” Bruno Mars 5’5” Bono 5'5 1/2" Willie Nelson 5’6” Scott Ian 5’6” Flea 5'6" Also, realising that I’m in that 8th percentile, I began to think about how most guitars were probably designed to fit someone larger than me. Again, I don’t really think about it. I own and play Les Pauls (including an R6 with a baseball bat neck), a 335, a 16” archtop etc. I used to play a Strat exclusively and never found the longer scale length a problem. However, I remember the last time I played a Casino with the shorter neck joint, thinking how much more comfortable it was than my 335. I also fell in love with a Martin 00, and remember thinking I’d never played an acoustic that was so comfortable. Maybe I’m playing less than optimal guitars for my stature? If you’re less than 5’6”, what guitars do you think fit you best? What guitars work best for you ergonomically? What guitars look right proportionally on shorter folks? (I remember thinking a Tele looks way better on Andy Summers who is 5’7”, than a Strat).
