A Dominican prior, Torquemada grew close to Ferdinand II and Isabella I of the newly created kingdom of Spain, becoming their confessor and advisor. He was appointed Inquisitor General in 1483. Remembered for his cruelty, he owes his reputation to the harsh rules of procedure that he devised for the Spanish Inquisition and to the rigor with which he had them enforced. He was largely instrumental in bringing about the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492. What limited his power in 1494?

This Day in History Edvard Munch's The Scream is Stolen at Gunpoint (2004)

Edvard Munch completed four versions of his most famous work, The Scream, an expressionist depiction of modern humanity's spiritual anguish. In 1994, the version belonging to Norway's National Gallery was stolen, but it was soon recovered in a sting operation. A decade later, thieves stole the version belonging to the Munch Museum. Despite rumors that the painting had been burned, the Oslo government offered a hefty reward for information leading to its recovery. What was its fate?

Riefenstahl was a German filmmaker whose most famous works are documentary propaganda films for the German Nazi Party. Her Triumph of the Will, a documentary of a huge Nazi rally glorifying Hitler, is widely regarded as one of the most effective pieces of propaganda ever produced. After the war, Riefenstahl was classified as a Nazi sympathizer and blacklisted. Later, she became interested in underwater photography and the Nuba tribe in the Sudan. This internationally famous, month-long festival in [Bayreuth]( Bavaria, Germany, celebrates the music of [Richard Wagner](. Performances are in the Festspielhaus (Festival Theater) designed by Wagner himself specifically for the presentation of his works. The festival was launched with the first complete performance of the four-opera [Der Ring des Nibelungen]( (The Ring of the Nibelung), triumphantly presented in the new Festspielhaus (Festival Theater) on Aug. 13, 14, 16, and 17, 1876. Except for wartime interruptions, the festival has been staged every year since then.
