[Full article]( BIG IDEAS IN ASPEN again from lovely Aspen, Colorado, where in an effort to provide additional ideological balance to the program, they have asked me to speak in the closing ceremony. I am not kidding. This is the way the world works, apparently – make fun of a conference for years on Twitter, get invited to the conference on their dime, get asked to speak at the conference. I am supposed to chat with Pete Wehner and Mike Gerson on the topic of civil dialogue. I have no idea what I have to offer on that front, but I guess we’ll find out. The overall reaction I have to this place and its odd collection of people is sadness – not because of their ever-present attitude of confusion, the despair at every invocation to keep on keeping on during a time of trial and tribulation, or the guilt-ridden emotions expressed in so many little ways, but because of the dearth of truly big ideas on display here. The nature of this conference is that in order for your idea to get a hearing, it must be limited in its craziness or ambition – it must be the idea of the editorial page, not the idea of the true disrupter. It is rather like Lionel Trilling’s invocation regarding bureaucracy, that ideas give up their bigness and complexity in order to survive.
