current coup against Jim DeMint at the Heritage Foundation has multiple motivating factors, none of them good. Say what you will of DeMintâs leadership style, he has helmed Heritage during a period in which the think tank has gained increased relevance and he has effectively succeeded in moving beyond the typical white paper ignored by Washington. As someone very much aware of how Capitol Hill works, DeMint positioned Heritage as the closest conservative ally of the Trump team, and reaped the benefits. But now a group of insiders at Heritage frustrated by DeMint, motivated by ambition and money, are attempting to pull off a coup. They would be wise to learn the lesson gained by so many in Washington over the years â that those who attempt a coup rarely benefit from it.
