The most annoying, simply because the gap between its frequency of play and the quality of the song is John Lennon’s “Happy Xmas (War is Over)” which combines the saccharine lyrics of a 1971 Lennon/Ono team more interested in making a political point than writing a good song with a surfeit of utopian Boomer nostalgia. Its popularity among a certain kind of artist has also led to its being covered by a ridiculous number of groups, despite the fact that war is definitively not over and Yoko Ono’s billboard campaign definitively did not end it.
