The approach used by CNN resulted in an absurd amount of debate time for former Rep. John Delaney as he was repeatedly used as a stand-in for Joe Biden or other centrists in numerous ways, despite his zero percent polling average. Focusing on Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders, Delaney, Hickenlooper, Bullock, and Ryan tried to make the most of their time offering critiques of the aggressive progressivism of other candidates – these were largely dismissed as “Republican talking points”, which they are, which is exactly why they ought to be tested and overcome at this stage instead of in a general election.
