The power of celebrity is enormous in American life, and the appetite for selfies is boundless. Avenatti’s “interview” with John Heilemann – if you can call it that, given the kid gloves Heilemann donned and the clapping seals with media lanyards – was happening the same time and in the same building as our Texas Tribune Fest panel, and the line was around the block. It is impossible to not notice the slick sheen of his spray tanned forehead, which catches the eye under the light as he glad-hands with voters. As he stood near our table, a female friend who stands at 5’8 in flats walked by him, and I remarked “Huh, you’re taller than him”.
