And yet he did, a persistent figure and a sign that for all his bluster Donald Trump is actually loathe to fire people, even people who don’t seem to be doing a particularly good job when it comes to running their department. But at long last, the day has come, and Tillerson – always an odd choice for this role – is gone, replaced by Mike Pompeo, head of the CIA, respected on Capitol Hill, but also a decidedly more hawkish and war-experienced figure in the mix of things.
