By Hannah Myrick Woo! It’s Friday! Every Friday of National Poetry Month, we’re sharing poetry recs from some local booksellers. [Last week](~/AASU4wA~/RgRkO_9oP0QyaHR0cHM6Ly9yZWFkLmxldHRlcmhlYWQuZW1haWwvZXZlcmdyZXkvbGV0dGVyLzI5NDNXA3NwY0IKYktqelliY6GqllIbdHJpc3RyYW1iYWxkd2luODVAZ21haWwuY29tWAQAAABA) we talked to James Crossley from [Madison Books](~/AASU4wA~/RgRkO_9oP0QbaHR0cHM6Ly93d3cubWFkaXNvbmJrcy5jb20vVwNzcGNCCmJLanpZYmOhqpZSG3RyaXN0cmFtYmFsZHdpbjg1QGdtYWlsLmNvbVgEAAAAQA~~), and this time around we’re talking to Gabrielle Bates from [Open Books: A Poem Emporium](~/AASU4wA~/RgRkO_9oP0QxaHR0cHM6Ly9vcGVuLWJvb2tzLWEtcG9lbS1lbXBvcml1bS5teXNob3BpZnkuY29tL1cDc3BjQgpiS2p6WWJjoaqWUht0cmlzdHJhbWJhbGR3aW44NUBnbWFpbC5jb21YBAAAAEA~) (which will open in Pioneer Square on April 30). Here are Gabrielle’s recs: 📘 frank: sonnets, by Diane Seuss: There’s a reason so many people are going wild for this book (finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award, winner of the PEN/Voelcker). The journey of these sonnets is something special, chock full of life in all of life’s devastating, humorous, wide-ranging glory. 📙 Constellation Route, by Matthew Olzmann: Writing poems in the form of letters, Olzmann explores the (at times, comforting, at times, terrifying) conundrum of our connectedness—to each other, to the earth—with comedic flair and depth. In a rare move, he also includes poems written by other contemporary poets, addressed to him, in the book—a testament to friendship and a source of great delight. Thanks for sharing, Gabrielle! We’ll have more picks next week from a local poet who will tell us why the Seattle poetry scene is so special. Now let’s get into today’s headlines, a member guide full of a month’s worth of film festivals and exciting news for Washingtonians and Oregonians alike. The rebuilt rail trestle, which crosses the Columbia River near Vantage, Oregon, connects two sections of the Palouse to Cascades State Park Trail. Previously, those traveling along the route had to seek rides over a highway crossing. Governor Jay Inslee called the trail “a national asset,” and many at the bridge dedication noted the difference the bridge will make to local communities. One tribal leader in attendance urged those crossing the bridge to remember the sweeping terrain nearby “is still sacred to our people.” ([OPB](~/AASU4wA~/RgRkO_9oP0SNaHR0cHM6Ly93d3cub3BiLm9yZy9hcnRpY2xlLzIwMjIvMDQvMTQvY29sdW1iaWEtcml2ZXItYnJpZGdlLXdhc2hpbmd0b24tc3RhdGUtcGFsb3VzZS1jYXNjYWRlcy1zdGF0ZS1wYXJrLXRyYWlsLWN5Y2xpc3RzLWhvcnNlLXJpZGVycy1oaWtlcnMvVwNzcGNCCmJLanpZYmOhqpZSG3RyaXN0cmFtYmFsZHdpbjg1QGdtYWlsLmNvbVgEAAAAQA~~)) 👀 The H-Mart next to the Capitol Hill light rail station is finally open today, but it’s going by a different name — M2M Mart. The Korean American supermarket chain will still offer its staple Asian groceries and fresh produce but in an “urban convenience format.” The new location, expected to measure around 16,000 square feet, will be stocked with bakery goods, BBQ chicken and other favorites. According to a U.S. economic impact analysis report the tech giant recently released, it has added 40,000 full-time workers and invested $37 billion in offices and data centers in 26 states over the past five years. Openings in trades that are “critical to city business needs,” such as carpentry and electrical inspection, aren’t being filled in part due to the city’s classification system, which hasn’t been updated since 1990. The system essentially only deems a worker qualified if they have the exact experience listed for a position, rather than accepting alternative qualifications. For example: if you don’t have the right college credit requirements, it’s very difficult to get senior-level positions even if you’ve been in your field for 20 years. The Seattle City Council is working to adjust how they hire and attract candidates in order to fill these critical vacancies. ([My Northwest](~/AASU4wA~/RgRkO_9oP0TIaHR0cHM6Ly9teW5vcnRod2VzdC5jb20vMzQzMzIwMS9zcGQtaGlyaW5nLWJvbnVzZXMtZGViYXRlLW92ZXJoYXVsLWNpdHktb2Ytc2VhdHRsZS10YWxlbnQtcmVjcnVpdG1lbnQtcHJvY2Vzcy8_dXRtX3NvdXJjZT1Dcm9zc2N1dCUyMERhaWx5JnV0bV9tZWRpdW09ZW1haWwmdXRtX2NhbXBhaWduPUNyb3NzY3V0K0RhaWx5KzIwMjIwNDEzKy0rUkVBRFlXA3NwY0IKYktqelliY6GqllIbdHJpc3RyYW1iYWxkd2luODVAZ21haWwuY29tWAQAAABA)) Related: The Seattle Police Department is especially affected by the outdated system — 43 officers have separated from SPD this year, leaving deployable staff at 888 and falling very short of the 1,400 and 1,500 officers the department says they need. In February, the Seattle City Council initially authorized $220,000 for incentive pay and bonuses to attract more candidates. However, before they actually spend it, council members are awaiting the results of a study that will tell them more about the efficacy of that system. To enter the competition, you’ll need to share your favorite Space Needle memory in 200 words or fewer [on their website](~/AASU4wA~/RgRkO_9oP0QeaHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuc3BhY2VuZWVkbGUuY29tLzYwVwNzcGNCCmJLanpZYmOhqpZSG3RyaXN0cmFtYmFsZHdpbjg1QGdtYWlsLmNvbVgEAAAAQA~~). Flesch reading score

Flesch reading score measures how complex a text is. The lower the score, the more difficult the text is to read. The Flesch readability score uses the average length of your sentences (measured by the number of words) and the average number of syllables per word in an equation to calculate the reading ease. Text with a very high Flesch reading ease score (about 100) is straightforward and easy to read, with short sentences and no words of more than two syllables. Usually, a reading ease score of 60-70 is considered acceptable/normal for web copy.
