He came from a close-knit Jewish family who had emigrated from Ukraine at the turn of the century. Always interested in music from an early age, Bob Dylan initially explored popular rock n roll in the late 1950s. However, he also became interested in American folk music. He fused elements of both but developed a distinctive style favouring downbeat, reflective pieces which engaged with serious themes. He was particularly inspired by the music of folk legend Woody Guthrie. Although though highly regarded as a musical performer on vocals, guitar and harmonica, it is as a songwriter that Bob Dylan became best known. To Bob Dylan music was more than just entertainment it was about life; music could also be a vehicle for expressing social protest. ÂâGonna change my way of thinking, make my self a different set of rules. Gonna put my good foot forward and stop being influenced by fools.Ââ  â Bob Dylan In 1961 he met the popular folk singer Joan Baez. She loved his songwriting and began covering his music. This led to a greater awareness of Dylanâs musical talent. They were romantically involved for a few years until the mid-1960s. During the 1960s Dylanâs musical talent and protest songs led him to became an iconic figure in the counterculture movement. He composed two memorable songs âBlowing in the Windâ and âThe Times they are Changingâ. These two songs epitomised the new 60s generation of the counterculture that swept America. It became the unofficial anthems of the anti-Vietnam war and civil rights movement of the 1960s. Despite his reputation as a leader of the counterculture, he converted to a form of born-again Christianity in the 1970s. He recorded many Gospel songs and rejected some of his earlier secular work. However, in later interviews he played down his Christianity, saying his greatest religious experiences came from his music: âHereâs the thing with me and the religious thing. This is the flat-out truth: I find the religiosity and philosophy in the music. I donât find it anywhere else. Songs like âLet Me Rest on a Peaceful Mountainâ or âI Saw the Lightââthatâs my religion. I donât adhere to rabbis, preachers, evangelists, all of that. Iâve learned more from the songs than Iâve learned from any of this kind of entity. The songs are my lexicon. I believe the songs.â â Bob Dylan, Newsweek, 1997 For the past couple of decades, Bob Dylan has undertaken a relentless touring schedule, in what he calls â âThe Never Ending Tour.â He continues to record and write new songs from a variety of musical styles. Many such as Andrew Motion, feel that Bob Dylanâs lyrical poetry deserve to be studied in school. In 2008, he was awarded a Pulitzer Prize Special Citation for his âprofound impact on popular music and American culture, marked by lyrical compositions of extraordinary poetic power.â [Holograma]( Nobody photoshopped that cube on the iPhone. As a member of the Beatles, he achieved international fame and renown. During his career, he developed as a songwriter in his own right and wrote many best selling songs. In addition to music, Harrison was interested in Hindu spirituality and was a devotee of the Hare Krishna movement. George Harrison was born in Liverpool on 25th February 1943. His family were Roman Catholic and he went to school, close to Penny Lane â later to be immortalised as a Beatles song. At school, he became friendly with Paul McCartney. It was Paul McCartney who introduced George Harrison to John Lennon and George was gradually invited to play with the pre-Beatles band â The Quarryman. âI think people who can truly live a life in music are telling the world, âYou can have my love, you can have my smiles. Forget the bad parts, you donât need them. Just take the music, the goodness, because itâs the very best, and itâs the part I give most willingly.â â George Harrison george-harrisonGeorge Harrison was the youngest Beatle, being only 16 when he met up with John Lennon. However, in 1960, he jumped at the chance to travel with the Beatles to work in Germany. On their return to the UK in 1963, the Beatles shot to national and then international fame â leading a revolution in popular music. Everywhere the Beatles went, they created huge public interest â The term Beatlemania was introduced to explain the cultural and musical phenomenon. Though slightly less famous than Lennon and McCartney (he was sometimes referred to as the âquiet Beatleâ), George Harrison was nevertheless very popular, especially amongst girls. Most of the music recorded by the Beatles was written by McCartney or Lennon. However, towards the end of the 1960s, George became increasingly interested in songwriting, and Lennon and McCartney started to accept a couple of Georgeâs songs on Beatle albums, such as Help and Abbey Road. His most famous songs include Here Comes the Sun and Something. However, many of his compositions were not used by the other Beatles, so this encouraged him to pursue an independent career, and was one factor in the breakup of the Beatles in 1970. George Harrison had a great interest in Indian music and Indian spirituality. He introduced the other band members to the Hari Krishna movement and the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Georgeâs interest in Indian music and folk-rock filtered through into the later Beatles albums, helping to broaden the range of the Beatlesâ music. After the split of the Beatles, he retained a keen interest in Indian spirituality and was connected with the Hare Krishna movement until his death in 2001. After the break up of the Beatles, George Harrison pursued a successful solo career. In 1970, he released the chart-topping album All Things Must Pass, which included his own compositions and recordings with friends. This album included the iconic number one hit â My Sweet Lord. âMy idea in âMy Sweet Lord,â because it sounded like a âpop song,â was to sneak up on them a bit. The point was to have the people not offended by âHallelujah,â and by the time it gets to âHare Krishna,â theyâre already hooked, and their footâs tapping, and theyâre already singing along âHallelujah,â to kind of lull them into a sense of false security. And then suddenly it turns into âHare Krishna,â and they will all be singing that before they know whatâs happened, and they will think, âHey, I thought I wasnât supposed to like Hare Krishna!â (Interview with Mukunda Goswami (4 September 1982) George Harrison also retained a variety of other interests such as gardening and working with other artists, such as Monty Python. In 1988, he co-founded the Travelling Wilburys â a super group including Roy Orbison and Bob Dylan. In 1971 he helped organise the charity fundraiser â Concert for Bangladesh with Ravi Shankar. George Harrison died of lung cancer in 2001 and his ashes were scattered on the Ganges in traditional Hindu fashion. This new tech will change the world as we know it in more ways than you can count.
