He was born as Richard Jenkins on November 10, 1925, in Pontrhydyfen, South Wales. He grew up in a large Welsh family of thirteen children. His mother died when he was two meaning he was brought up by his elder sister and her husband. From an early age, he became interested in amateur dramatics and made a good impact in early performances. However, as a youngster, he was even more interested in rugby and sport than acting. He left school at 16, and in 1943, entered the RAF, serving as a navigator from 1944-47. After leaving the RAF, he gained roles in the theatre and began to make a name for himself as a promising upcoming actor. His positive theatre reviews led to some very good parts in films, which soon led to offers from Hollywood. This move to Hollywood would cement his reputation as an international star. Influential Hollywood films included: The Robe (1953), My Cousin Rachel (1952), and Alexander the Great (1956). One of the most significant films was the epic 1962, film â Cleopatra, which he played opposite Elizabeth Taylor. The film was a great commercial hit, helped by the legendary chemistry between Elizabeth Taylor (Cleopatra) and Richard Burton. This on-screen romance led to a real-life romance, and both got divorced to be able to get married in 1964. They divorced later. Richard Burton was married four times. He replaced Stephen Boyd as Mark Anthony in the film Cleopatra opposite Elizabeth Taylor. Their off-screen romance made headlines around the world, and after divorcing their respective spouses, they married in 1964. âIf I had a chance for another life, I would certainly choose a better complexion⦠I rather like my reputation, actually, that of a spoiled genius from the Welsh gutter, a drunk, a womanizer; itâs rather an attractive image. When he reached the age of 50, after a five-year career slump. I can only say with Edith Piaf, âJe ne regrette rienâ.â Richard Burton âRichard Burton, 58, is Dead; Rakish Stage and Screen Starâ Richard Burton appeared in many of the most popular films of the 1960s and 1970s; with his good looks and charisma, he was seen as a guaranteed box office draw and gained the lead role in a variety of films. However, he always retained an attraction to the theatre and acted in many notable roles, such as King Arthur in Camelot (Broadway) and Hamlet (London). Burton was a prolific actor, and due to high spending commitments rarely refused work. Though this meant he sometimes appeared in less critically acclaimed films, such as Bluebeard (1972) and the Klansman (1974). He was nominated six times for an Oscar, but never won. He died at his home in Céligny, Switzerland, on August 5, 1984, from a cerebral haemorrhage. His liver and general health had been weakened following a lifelong tendency to drink and smoke heavily. He was buried in Vieux Cemetery in Céligny. [The man cuts the cable]( Michael Caine Biography Michael Caine Born Maurice Joseph Micklewhite, he later took the screen name, Michael Caine. Michael Caine is one of the most famous English actors of the post-war period, starring in over 100 films and renowned for his distinctive working-class voice. Michael Caine was born 14 March 1933 in Rotherhithe, London, England. He grew up in London, living for 18 years in a simple prefab house in Elephant and Castle. From 1952 to 1954 he served in the British Army as part of the compulsory National Service. He was sent to Korea where he had a feeling he would die, but he survived the conflict and returned to England. Despite receiving no classic drama training, he responded to an advert in the paper and began acting in the 1950s. He performed many roles for tv and film and rose to international fame with his appearance as an upper-class English officer in the epic film Zulu (1964). Zulu told of the epic siege by thousands of Zulu warriors against a British outpost. Fighting to the death, the British managed to hold out against the massed assault of the Zulus. Another iconic film of the 1960s was the âItalian Jobâ (1969) Michael Caine led a group of English gangsters to take part in an audacious robbery of gold from Italy. It is famous for the chase scenes involving Mini Coopers; the film was later remade. âYouâre only supposed to blow the bloody doors off!â â Michael Caine, Italian Job Other blockbusters of the 1960s and 70s, Caine starred in included: Battle of Britain (1969), The Eagle Has Landed (1976), Get Carter (1971), and The Man Who Would Be King (1975). In the 1980s, Michael Caine moved to America where he continued to star in many films. However, many films he made in this period were criticised for being low quality. He later admitted to being motivated by money rather than the quality of the film. However, in 1984 he won the golden globe award for his role in Educating Rita. In the 2000s, his career had something of a revival. He starred in in Miss Congeniality (2000), Last Orders (2001), The Quiet American (2002), for which he was Oscar-nominated. He was one of only two actors to be Oscar-nominated in every decade from the 1960s to 2000s. He was made a CBE in 1992. Sir Alec Guinness Biography Guinness was one of the most formidable and versatile actors of the post-war period. Appearing in roles as diverse as Fagan in Oliver Twist, to the greatest Ealing comedies, and to Ben Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars, Alec Guinness was much loved for his commanding performances â rich in diversity and depth of character. âÂEssentially, Iâm a small-part actor whoâs been lucky enough to play leading roles for most of his lifeÂ.â â Alec Guinness Alecâs childhood was far from happy. He was born, 2 April 1914; no father was mentioned on his birth certificate. His mother and stepfather displayed little love or concern and his schooling was nondescript. When Alec reached adulthood, he cut off connections with his mother. guinnessIn 1934, with the help of John Gielgud, Alec Guinness was given his first significant stage performance in Hamlet. In this interwar period, he gained a good reputation for performances in various stage plays. He also married Merula Salaman; they were to be happily married for 60 years â a rarity for the showbiz environment. At the outbreak of war, Alec applied to join the navy; after initially failing, he was eventually accepted and ended up leading a landing craft in the Mediterranean theatre of war. After the war, Alecâs big breakthrough came with his role in two David Leon filmâs â Great Expectations and as Fagan in Oliver Twist. It was this that made him a star on the big screen and a household name, overshadowing his stage career. This led Alec Guinness to star in the best of the Ealing comedies during its golden years. His first virtuoso performance was in Kind Hearts and Coronets, where Alec Guinness starred as all eight members of the DâAscoyne family who were killed by Dennis Price. Though Alec later was somewhat dismissive of the importance of the film, it was widely hailed as a great performance. His marvellous comic touch with a hint of darkness was further explored in other Ealing comedies such as the brilliant â Lady Killers, The Lavender Hill Mob and The Man in the White Suit. Guinness went on to star in some of the most successful films of his generation, including Lawrence of Arabia, Dr Zhivago and A Passage to India. In 1977, he starred in George Lucasâ box office smash â The Star Wars trilogy. Cast as Obi-Wan Kenobi, Alec Guinness was perfect as the wise and intriguing father figure to Luke Sky Walker. The film made Alec Guinness rich as he gained a 2% royalty from the film revenue. However, he later admitted he disliked the cult status that the film brought him. He never wished to be typecast and later said that he had got fed up with the character. âWhat I didnât tell Lucas was that I just couldnât go on speaking those bloody awful, banal lines. Iâd had enough of the mumbo jumbo.â By the end of the 1980s, Alec had disappeared into virtual retirement. He had little taste for cameo roles or TV appearances. His commanding performances were easily remembered â his versatility and ability to inject a marvellous sense of both intrigue and a character that jumped up from the screen leaving a lasting impression. Guinness delivered his lines with great poise â almost deliberate slowness for dramatic effect. He said of this: âI am always ashamed of the slowness of my reading. I think it stems from the fact that when I come across dialogue in a novel, I can`t resist treating it as the text of a play and acting it out, with significant pauses and all.â Unlike some actors, Alec Guinness was a master of disguise. He could fit into different characters so well, one felt one was watching a particular character â rather than watching the famous actor â Alec Guinness. He was knighted in 1959 and died 5 August 2000, aged 86. He was survived by his wife and one son. Religion Alec Guinness was a practising Christian and converted to Catholicism shortly after his role as Obi Wan Kenobi. Writing in his autobiography, he writes of an experience where he felt a religious experience. âI was walking up Kingsway in the middle of an afternoon when an impulse compelled me to start running.
