Things you didn't know your hormones controlled
The Grind
Hormones have a bad rap. We blame them for acne, for mood swings, for menopause, and for falling in love.
But hormones are so much more than that. Did you know that hormones actually keep us alive?
The pituitary gland (AKA the hormone control center) produces all sorts of hormones that act on other glands to make them produce hormones.
One of the most important of these hormones is "glucocorticoid," which helps regulate water balance, sugar balance, and blood pressure. Without glucocorticoids, you would get sick and die.
Hormones also play a big role in our sleeping patterns. You've probably heard of the "circadian rhythm," which is a cycle of fluctuating hormones that is designed to wake us up in the morning and help us sleep at night.
Working irregular shifts or flying to a different time zone can screw up this rhythm and make it harder to sleep.
The Facts
We can also blame hormones for hangovers.
"Vasopressin," a hormone produced by the pituitary gland, is responsible for controlling the body's water levels. That means it can make you thirsty or make you have to pee. Alcohol disrupts this hormone, which is why we have hangovers.
Hormones are also responsible for weight and hunger. Your weight is tied to the hormone "thyroxine," which is produced by the thyroid gland.
Thyroxine controls the body's metabolic rate. An overactive thyroid produces too much of this hormone, leading to increased appetite, shakiness, and weight loss.
An underactive thyroid produces too little of this hormone, which can cause weight gain, slowed heart rate, and fatigue.
Your blood sugar level, which also plays a role in hunger and satiety, is controlled by the pancreas-produced hormone "insulin." Other hormones, produced by the stomach and brain, tell us when we're hungry and when we're full.

Pro tennis player gets a sexy surprise at the US Open
The Grind
When Australian tennis player Thanasi Kokkinakis went to the locker room to prepare for a match against two-time quarter-finalist Janko Tipsarevic, he wasn't expecting to find a thong in his gym bag.
Kokkinakis had sent two bags of clothing out to be washed, one for himself and one for his coach Todd Langman.
"I turned up and there was one with G-strings and panties there. I opened my locker and I had one bag which was my clothes and one bag which, I guess, they thought was my coach's clothes."
Kokkinakis eventually got his coach's gym bag back, but not before posting some fun pictures on Twitter. "I thought I'd make a joke of it and put it on. There was a little sports bra as well so I put that on as well."
The Background
Kokkinakis says he's "pumped" to be back at Flushing Meadows. It is his first time at the tournament since he was forced to bow out two years ago due to an injury.
"The courts suit me here. The conditions suit me well, so I'm eager to get out there and hopefully I play well," said Kokkinakis.
The US Open is the final tournament of the Grand Slam, which includes the Australian Open, the French Open, and Wimbledon.
The two-week tournament is held annually at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows - Corona Park in Queens.
The reigning champion in Men's Singles from 2016 is Swiss player Stan Wawrinka.
