Nephi and his brother "Golden" spent their youth working as potato farmers. The frozen food market exploded in the years following the Second World War. Nephi and his brother, desperate to achieve the American dream, sold their farmland in order to purchase a flash-freezing plant in Oregon. The property was located right on the border of Oregon and Idaho, which would later give them the idea for the company name "Ore-Ida." The Gamble Frustrated with how much potato waste his factory was producing, Nephi decided to gather the potato scraps left over from the production of frozen French fries and bake them. The bite-sized golden potatoes were surprisingly delicious. Convinced his invention would be a hit, Nephi and his brother traveled nearly 3,000 miles to South Florida, where the 1954 National Potato Convention was being held at the shiny new Fontainebleu Hotel on Millionaire's Row in Miami. Nephi bribed the hotel chef to try his creation, which led to Tater Tots being served to the nation's potato experts. The rest was history. Less than five years after the convention, Ore-Ida had consumed 25% of the frozen potato market. By 1964, Ore-Ida was pulling in $31 million per year. Over the next few days, the storm would dump over 50 inches of rain on the Lone Star State. Harvey knocked out more than 300 cell sites, and massive flooding has made it all but impossible for repairmen to activate backup generators. As of Sunday, more than 140,000 people were without cable or wireline service. This is seriously bad news for people trying to call for help or connect with loved ones. The Solution In the wake of the storm, Verizon has decided to give Texans free phone and some free data until September 8th. "Verizon is offering 3GB of bonus data to qualified Texas counties, so you can stay connected when it matters most," said a spokesperson. T-Mobile and Sprint are providing free phone service and texting to users in certain areas until September 1st, and Comcast has promised to unlock its vast network of WiFi hotspots. Areas that were hit the hardest by Hurricane Harvey include Refugio County, Aransas County, San Patricio County, and Calhoun County.  Good to the last sip  Did you know...
