Finnish scientists create food from electricity
The Grind
A team of researchers in Finland developed a way to produce food from electricity.
Unfortunately, the powdered synthetic food does not taste great. However, it's nutritious and produced in an electric bioreactor farm powered by renewable energy.
The process requires nothing more than water, electricity, microbes, and carbon dioxide.
The Details
A bioreactor the size of a soda can takes about 2 weeks to produce a single gram of synthetic food. Lead scientist Juha-Pekka Pitkanen predicts it could take up to 10 years to reach commercial capacity.
"We are currently focusing on developing the technology: reactor concepts, technology, improving efficiency, and controlling the process," explains Pitkanen.
If mass production proves successful, the process could be a revolutionary tool in the fight against world hunger.
Cheap, nutritious food would be particularly useful during emergencies and in areas not suited for agriculture - just imagine how it could be used today to help the people of Venezuela.

In defense of cargo shorts
The Grind
Drexel University Professor Joe Hancock wrote his Ph.D. thesis on the history of cargo pants. According to Hancock, cargo pants originated in the military. Pockets were located on the sides and the back, but not the front because military leaders didn't want their men putting their hands in their pockets.
The military designed the pants to zip off at the knee, paving the way for the shorts that now remind us of the late 90's, tourists, and "dad-friendly fashion."
The Details
Cargo may be a fashion faux pas today, but according to the Internet, there are 10x more supporters than haters.
Here are some of my favorite defenses:
1. Writing for Business Insider in May 2017, Jim Edwards argues that cargo shorts represent a battle of the sexes: men love them; woman hate them and are trying to take them away. His article is titled "It's time to end the war against men who wear cargo shorts."BR>
2. Writing for the Washington Post in August 2016, Daniel W. Drezner says, "Any article of clothing that helped defeat Hitler is an article of clothing that should never go out of style."
3. Writing for BroBible in August 2014, David Covucci points out that cargo shorts are the best way to "smuggle a bowl and an eighth into a concert."
4. This one is technically a satire, but it's still one of my favorites.
Writing for the Odyssey in April 2016, Joe Orman insists that if Charles Darwin were alive today, he would wear cargo shorts. Orman says cargo pockets are "big enough to hold at least 2 beers on each leg, and still have room for my phone, chain wallet, vape, and condoms for all the action I'm going to score rocking these cargo shorts!"
5. Writing for Today in July 2017, Doyin Richards argues that cargo shorts are perfect for fathers because they have room to store anything your kid might need. "Trust me, Batman would be more efficient if he ditched his ridiculous utility belt and rocked some cargo shorts instead."
