The Daily Grind -[View as a web page](    [The DAILY GRIND NEWS](  Grind for July 11, 2017  First sip  "Language and words for psychopaths are only word deep; there is no emotional coloring behind it. A psychopath can use a word like, 'I love you,' but it means nothing more to him than if he said, 'I'll have a cup of coffee.'" - Robert D Hare    New Tactics The Headline The Trump Administration is cracking down on illegals who hire smugglers to bring their children into the country The Grind From February to May 2017, ICE detained upwards of 5,000 unaccompanied children at the United States' border with Mexico. A common strategy for illegal immigrants is to sneak into the country to establish a foothold, so they can then proceed to bring their family over the border. How do they do this? By hiring a smuggler. These smugglers escort children to the border where they are then reconnected with their parents. Until recently, these parents (legal or illegal) have not been targets for arrest or deportation unless they have a criminal record. The Details Paying someone to sneak your child into the US is illegal (not to mention irresponsible), and the Trump Administration seeks to stop this practice. The administration has started to penalize and arrest these individuals. At best parents face being deported alongside their kids. At worst, they could be faced with criminal smuggling-related charges. The Administration hopes the new crackdown will discourage people from endangering their children by handing them over to smugglers and forcing them on a dangerous journey through regions plagued by drug cartel violence. (Not to mention the high likelihood of a smuggler trying to extort the parents by threatening kidnapping or violence.) Parents who "have placed children directly into harm's way by entrusting them to violent criminal organizations will be held accountable," says Jennifer Elzea, the deputy press secretary for ICE. The crackdown is the latest phase of Trump's broad immigration enforcement effort, which has already pushed illegal immigration numbers to the lowest we've seen in decades. You Might Like    Just Breathe The Headline Federal researchers are investigating rising rates of black lung disease The Problem Researchers are finding more and more cases of black lung disease - a fatal respiratory condition which affects coal miners. The technical name for the disease is "coal workers' pneumoconiosis," and it is caused by prolonged exposure to coal and silica dust. The effects of black lung are similar to that of tobacco smoking. Additionally, inhaled coal dust builds up in the lungs and cannot be removed. The Investigation According to the Mine Safety and Health Administration, about 99% of mining companies are complying with the exposure limits for coal dust. Even so, researchers are reporting "historically unparalleled" levels of black lung in Central Appalachia. NPR's Howard Berkes says there could not be as many cases as we've seen if "compliance rates accurately reflected actual exposure." "There's a great deal of evidence... which definitively demonstrates that we are in the midst of an epidemic of black lung disease," said epidemiologist Scott Laney last month during a presentation he gave in West Virginia. Laney and his team are reviewing medical records at clinics across the country in an attempt to find out what is causing the spike in black lung. "We're at the epicenter of one of the largest industrial medicine disasters that the United States has ever seen," he said in April. There have been at least 2,000 cases of progressive massive fibrosis (advanced stage black lung) during the past six years. Surprisingly, this is 20 times the number recorded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health for that time period. Unfortunatley, an additional 84 miners have been diagnosed with advanced stage black lung in Virginia during the past four months.  Good to the last drop  Did you know...
