The Headline Nike founder Phil Knight donates $2.5 million to GOP candidate The Grind Nike founder Phil Knight donated $2.5 million to Knute Buehler (R), who is campaigning to unseat Oregon Governor Kate Brown (D). Knight's donation is by far the largest individual donation to any political candidate in the state. The Details Nike has donated to the Republican Party in the past, but Knight's massive donation to Buehler comes as a surprise considering the company's September decision to run an ad featuring Colin Kaepernick - the former NFL player who made national headlines when he refused to stand during the National Anthem. Consumers responded to the ad by destroying Nike products and spreading the hashtag #NikeBoycott. Nike stock dropped 3.2%. "[Mr. Knight] is clearly accustomed to buying whatever he wants," said a spokesperson for Governor Brown. "A lot of Oregonians are wondering if this is an attempt to buy a governor." -- Knute Buehler is a "moderate Republican" who is pro-choice and a supporter of gay rights. He holds more traditional views on gun control and immigration, and wants to repeal Oregon's sanctuary policies and improve cooperation between law enforcement and ICE. One reason behind Knight's donation could be Buehler's plans to update Oregon's public pensions system - a system Knight believes is going to 'sink the state' if it isn't changed. Knight has also blamed Gov. Brown for Oregon's poor economic record. "Why is Oregon so worse off fiscally than Arizona or Indiana?" said Knight during an interview. "Indiana certainly does not have more natural resources, more educated people. I conclude it is due to political leadership." Scott is attempting to replace incumbent Bill Nelson in the Senate, while DeSantis is up against Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum for the position of governor. "You have only one choice, Ron DeSantis for governor," said Trump, speaking at a rally at Pensacola International Airport. "If you want to pay high taxes, you ought to vote for the mayor of Tallahassee...You will destroy the state that I love." The Details As I wrote a few days ago, the liberal media has ignored an FBI investigation involving Andrew Gillum and his suspected ethics violations including: misuse of office funds, failure to report political donations, and the acceptance of gifts from lobbyists. "Andrew Gillum is not equipped to be your governor," said Trump. "It's not for him." Trump also traveled to Montana last week, where he campaigned in support of GOP Senate candidate Matt Rosendale. At both rallies, Trump reminded voters of the GOP's successful tax overhaul and the recent confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. He also spoke about the approaching migrant caravan, defended his decision to focus on illegal immigration during the final days of the election, and reiterated his promise to end the constitutional guarantee of birthright citizenship.
