The Grind In 2016, the city of San Francisco passed a ballot measure that allowed non-US citizens with children to vote in school board elections. This week, the city began registering undocumented immigrants and other non-citizens to vote in the November election for the city school board. The policy is a "no-brainer," says Hillary Ronen, a member of the SF Board of Supervisors. "Why would we not want our parents invested in the education of their children?" San Francisco's new voting policy, which expires in 2022, passed with 54% of the vote after two previous attempts failed. Similar policies have been approved or are being considered in Illinois, Maryland, and Massachusetts. The Details Parents should always have a voice when it comes to the education of their children, but the right to vote has long been a right reserved for US citizens only. "The right to vote is something that goes along with citizenship - and should be," argues RNC member Harmeet Dhillon. As both supporters and opponents have pointed out, the new policy could give the federal government a new way to track down illegal immigrants living in San Francisco. "I think in this case in particular, what is very risky is that we don't know where this president will go," says Supervisor Sandra Lee Fewer. "Are there risks involved? Absolutely. But quite frankly, there are risks involved for all of us with the Trump administration." San Francisco's new voting policy, which expires in 2022, passed with 54% of the vote after two previous attempts failed. It's called cytomegalovirus (CMV), and experts believe most humans are infected with it. CMV is a type of herpes transmitted by bodily fluids. While it generally does not produce systems, it is impossible to remove from the human body once contracted. In a recent study, Dr. Janko Nikolich-Zugich and his team theorized that CMV could be contributing to the natural weakening of the immune system later in life. To test the effects of CMV on the immune system, researchers infected mice with Listeria, a type of bacteria typically found in contaminated foods. "We assumed [CMV] would make mice more vulnerable to other infections because it was using up resources and keeping the immune system busy," explains Smithey. The Details Instead, aged mice with CMV were better able to repel Listeria than aged mice without the virus. The team hasn't yet discovered how or why CMV seemed to enhance the immune response to Listeria, but they are content to have made a new discovery about the immune system. The team also discovered that both groups of aged mice had a diverse population of T cells similar to that of younger mice. The discovery puts into question the long-held belief that a person's T cell population decreases in diversity with age. Furthermore, the study suggests that T cells in mice with CMV were more responsive to invaders. "It's as if the CMV is issuing a signal that gets the best defenses out onto the field," says Dr. Nikolich-Zugich. If futures studies confirm that CMV is beneficial to the human immune system, the team hopes to begin working on a vaccine that could be used to boost immunity in older individuals.
