[The DAily GRIND News]( Grind for April 1, 2018 # First sip "I care not much for a man's religion whose dog and cat are not the better for it." - Abraham Lincoln   [Learn more about RevenueStripe...]( Working Together The Headline Kim Jong-un meets President Xi and makes plans to visit South Korea The Grind North Korean leader Kim Jong-un paid a surprise visit to Beijing this week to shore up his country's alliance with China ahead of negotiations with the US. The visit was Kim's first trip out of state since coming into power in 2011 and was his first face-to-face meeting with another world leader. Upon his return, Kim made formal plans to meet with South Korean President Moon Jae-in on April 27th; it will be the first time a North Korean leader has set foot south of the DMZ since the two countries split in 1945. Kim's plans to visit South Korea represent a giant step forward in the decades-long effort to ease tensions on the peninsula. Much of the credit for the summit goes to Trump, who through tough sanctions and tougher words has forced North Korea to play nice. The Implication While he was in China, Kim told President Xi Jinping that he is committed to the denuclearization of the peninsula and is looking forward to meeting with Trump. The Xi-Kim meeting implies that China will play a big role in US-North Korea negotiations, a fact that could make it harder to find common ground. "It's hard to overstate how dramatic this development is," says Adam Mount, an expert on US nuclear strategy. "It's clear both Pyongyang and Beijing won't be dictated to by Seoul and Washington, but also develop their own agenda. We should be aware it might be a coordinated agenda." President Trump said Wednesday he is looking forward to meeting Kim, but in the meantime, "maximum sanctions and pressure" would remain in effect. The Headline In the city that never sleeps, one lawmaker wants to stop people from checking work email after hours The Grind New York City Councilman Rafael Espinal (D) on Thursday introduced a bill that would give New Yorkers the "right to disconnect." The proposal would prohibit companies from requiring workers to answer texts and emails after hours. Companies that violate the rule would be punished with fines. "While technology has increased access to people and ideas, it's also made it possible for employees to be on call 24/7," says Espinal. "We need to establish clear boundaries for employees so they can maintain a healthy work-life balance and live without fear of retaliation for not answering work communication after work hours." The Details Of course everyone wants a healthy work-life balance, but as marketing professional Kyle Reyes pointed out during an interview with Fox News, "work-life balance is not something you can legislate." Work-life balance is something you achieve on your own, depending on your goals and career path. Reyes pointed out that the bill does not make exceptions for medical professionals, police, or salaried employees without a set schedule and threatens to disincentivize those seeking a promotion. "Any time the government puts its hand in a business and takes away from the ability for an employee to outshine and outperform and show their own skills and abilities, we're making a mistake," said Reyes.
