Three officers have already been suspended, one for failing to do anything useful during the shooting and two others for failing to check up on the perpetrator (Nikolas Cruz) after concerned callers warned that he was collecting weapons and said he wanted to "shoot up" a school. "The failure of Sheriff Israel and his deputies during and after the horrific shooting...and their failures to intervene regarding Nikolas Jacob Cruz in the years, months, and days leading up to that shooting, are unacceptable and unforgivable," wrote Florida House Speaker Richard Corcoran in a letter to Governor Rick Scott. "Sheriff Israel failed to maintain a culture of alertness," continues the letter. "As a result of Sheriff Israel's failures, students and teachers died." Corcoran's letter has over 70 signatures. The Details Sheriff Israel has largely shrugged off the criticism and says he will not voluntarily resign. "Deputies make mistakes. Police make mistakes. We all make mistakes, but it's not the responsibility of the general or the president if you have a deserter," Israel told CNN's Jake Tapper. In response to additional reports claiming at least three other Broward cops failed to enter the school during the shooting, Israel claimed he can only be responsible for what he knows. "At this point, we have no reason to believe anyone acted incorrectly or correctly. That's what an investigation is," he said, referring to his office's investigation into matters surrounding the school shooting. On Sunday, Governor Scott ordered a separate investigation into the police officers' response to the shooting "for there to be full accountability." These investigations "will do nothing to bring back the 17 victims," writes FL State Rep. Bill Hager in a letter to the governor. "The sheriff was fully aware of the threat this individual presented to his community and chose to ignore it." Scientists must keep these high-risk germs alive in order to study them and to develop treatments, but the cost of doing so is exorbitant. The current facility, which was expected to last 50 years, cost $214 million to build. Repairing it would take more time than building a new one, says the CDC, and more time means a higher risk of exposure. The Details Many of the original parts used in the existing facility's specialized systems are no longer being produced, making it nearly impossible to contain the sort of microbes the CDC wants to study. Repairing the current facility seems like the best option, but those who work in the lab insist that building a completely new facility is the best option. The CDC's request for $400 million may sound ridiculous, but less so when compared to the thought of a smallpox outbreak. "The longer it takes, the more likely there will be a failure. And if there's a failure, we lose an essential line of defense," said former CDC Director Tom Frieden. [share]( [tweet]( Good to the last drop Did you know...
