One of my most satisfying – and at times challenging – tasks as an editor here at The Conversation is responding to reader emails. Some days, I’ll receive a note from a reader who expresses appreciation for our mission to share experts’ knowledge to help people better understand a fast-changing world. One reader recently told us that our email newsletters have become an “indispensable resource,” which is wonderful to hear. Other days, readers will write in with a correction or to take issue with a particular article or area of coverage. My colleagues and I reply to those emails, as long as the reader is respectful and appears to be serious about what they have to say. I see all these interactions as a valuable way to connect to you, our audience – to get a feel for who our readers are and their interests. Often, readers email questions they’d like answered by an expert, and I pass along those story ideas to a colleague. Over time, I can see which topics resonate most with readers and get a keener sense of why they choose to read our newsletter emails over the hundreds of other options they have. On this Giving Tuesday, we want to tell you, our readers, that we appreciate you and hear you. Thank you for reading our work and also for helping make our jobs possible. Without donor funding, our operation would not be what it is today. I’ve seen this growth firsthand: I started at The Conversation as deputy managing editor nine years ago when we were a handful of people sitting around a single table in a basement at Boston University. Now we’re more than 35 people spread across the country and reach millions of readers.
