[The Conversation]( Jacinda Ardern was the youngest prime minister ever elected at the age of 37 in 2017 â but she didnât take to the term trailblazer. âI am not the first woman to multitask. I am not the first woman to work and have a baby. There are many women who have done this before,â Ardern, a mother of one, said in an interview in 2018, the year she had her daughter. But that doesnât mean that being prime minister of New Zealand is easy. Ardern, who faced questions about whether she would have a baby on her first day on the job, announced on Jan. 19 that she would soon be stepping down from her position. Her surprise announcement got me â and political science scholar Farida Jalalzai â thinking about how Ardernâs tenure stacks up against the [experiences and pressures facing other female heads of state](. âPeople also tend to think of places like New Zealand as countries where women have shattered the glass ceiling, politically speaking,â Jalalzai writes . âBut if this kind of sexist questioning and speculation is whatâs happening at the highest levels in the most egalitarian societies like New Zealand, then of course it must be happening in all of these other places where women are facing political violence.â Also today: - [How do you vaccinate a honey bee?](
