Sufferers of tinnitus say it is a phantom sound in the ears that can take many forms and vary from person to person: whistling, pulsing, whooshing, hissing, ringing or other highly uncomfortable, persistent and loud noises that seem to come from within oneâs own head. A friend who experiences tinnitus describes it as her left ear âscreamingâ at her if she runs or hikes too strenuously. Millions of people in the U.S. live with the condition, which can sometimes be debilitating. While there is currently no cure for tinnitus, there are some [highly effective strategies to help people]( manage the condition, writes Bradley Kesser, an ear specialist at the University of Virginia. These include sound-camouflaging devices, smartphone apps, medications and therapy to help address the underlying stressors that can sometimes exacerbate tinnitus.
