Though she faced resistance at the time, in her second election to the position, six years later, she received an overwhelming majority of the vote â nearly 83%. During her 10 years as principal chief, she led with strength and compassion, listening to the voices of community members and focusing on issues that benefited some of the most vulnerable among them, including housing, employment, education and rural development. In her [powerful profile of Mankillerâs life and legacy](, Julie Reed, an associate professor of Native American history at Penn State, traces her professional origin back to a lecture Mankiller gave at Reedâs college when she was an undergraduate. As a young Cherokee woman who was raised outside the boundaries of the Cherokee Nation, Reed had never seen a Native American woman speak to a public audience until then. âThrough her lifeâs work,â Reed writes, Mankiller âintroduced a generation of people not just to Cherokee history but also to a model of Native womenâs leadership.â This week we also liked articles about Americaâs fascination with [ancient Mediterranean culture](, what constitutes [ethical animal research]( and ways to [protect seafront property from rising sea levels](.
