[Click here]( Dear Reader, I started working at The Conversation as a politics and society editor in 2021, just five months after I gave birth to my second child. Before I was a mother, I was a reporter – and a die-hard believer in journalism's importance in supporting an open and well-informed society. I was startled – and then increasingly dismayed – by the routine layoffs at trusted news organizations and the shrinking media landscape. When I discovered The Conversation and a new approach to journalism, it gave me hope. I felt encouraged by The Conversation's innovative model of partnering seasoned journalists with university scholars to deliver essential breaking news and critical analysis, and by its growing success in reaching the public. As a politics and society editor, I cover some of the biggest stories in the news, everything from Donald Trump's various legal challenges to pivotal Supreme Court decisions, from Israel's war in the Gaza Strip to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. But my job is about going beyond the major headlines and filling in the gaps to help people clearly understand these complicated situations. I’ve edited stories explaining what exactly is the International Criminal Court and has it ever actually convicted warlords and other criminals? How could politicians use an obscure 1800s law that criminalized mailing what was considered "obscene" to limit abortion access? And is political polling actually reliable months ahead of a presidential election? These are big questions with complicated, winding answers – but I helped our authors turn their knowledge into clear, straightforward (but still nuanced) articles.
