Just one year earlier, Dryer and three others nabbed the first ascent of Hood's neighbor to the North, Mount Saint Helens. As founder of Portland's first and still surviving newspaper, the Oregonian, Dryer was able to document his achievement in print. However, his claims are disputed, and many people still believe that Dryer's former employee and future owner of the Oregonian (Dryer gave it to him in 1861 to repay a debt), Henry Pittock, made the first ascent of the formidable peak in 1857.
