On July 15th (that’s today!), 1806, American brigadier general Zebulon Pike set out to explore the southern portion of the newly acquired Louisiana Purchase. His main goal was to find the headwaters of the Red and Arkansas rivers. Unlike his predecessors Lewis and Clark who were exploring the north, the Pike Expedition would go down in infamy. They were captured by Spanish authorities in southern Colorado and held as prisoners for over five months, but not before discovering the most eastern 14,000-foot mountain in the Colorado Rockies which now bears the name Pikes Peak.
