January 2nd (that’s today!), 1897, the American novelist Stephen Crane escaped the sinking of The Commodore, a boat transporting him and 27 others to Cuba. Crane and three other men, including the ship’s Captain, abandoned The Commodore off the coast of Florida in a 10’ dinghy. Despite towering waves that threatened to capsize the boat, the survivors endured a 30-hour marathon session rowing the tiny boat toward present-day Daytona Beach. The small boat overturned in the surf before the men reached land, dumping them into the ocean and forcing them to swim to shore; one of them died.
