The 8,126-meter peak is located in the western Himalayas of Pakistan and is the ninth highest mountain in the world. It is notoriously difficult to climb. It has tremendous vertical relief on all sides, but Wein and his crew followed an established route to Camp IV beneath Rakhoit Peak on the main ridge to the summit. No one had ever climbed further than Camp IV and the German team was poised for success, but the avalanche that struck in the night destroyed those hopes and is one of the worst Himalayan disasters ever.
