âRadio has always been the farmerâs close associate."
Who we cover is a daily struggle.
The first instinct is to include large institutions and agencies, whose work affects lakhs of citizens.
Then there are the individual do-gooders - those who make their mark in their limited ways but show us all how we can take this nation forward.
These true disrupters are usually in positions, situations or jobs that seemingly exclude them from doing the extraordinary. And yet somehow they do it anyway.
My personal favourite is to find those who join both such angles â an individual from an unremarkable spot, who went on to impact unnumerable lives.
Such people are hard to find. But here at The Better India, we take pride in our relentless desire to find such people, speak to them and bring you their stories.
Surprising as many may find it, there are thousands of people who individually transformed the lives of millions. And since most Indians are outside the limited reach of these do-gooders, the nation at large may have never heard of them at all.
So today, it is with great pleasure that I would like to share the story of an All India Radio (AIR) producer and host from Kerala - [Muraleedharan Thazhakkara.](
The retirement of government employees hardly makes the news. The fact that leading newspapers widely covered Thazhakkara's retirement in Kerala stands testament to his popularity.
He popularised the radio programme Vayalum Veedum (Farm and Home). It is a daily programme that airs for 25 minutes, which appeals to farmers and laypersons alike.
During his time at the AIR, he recorded countless interviews with scientists, bureaucrats, and everyday food-growers.
He has interviewed at least two guests per episode every single day for the past 28 years. The number of interviews is probably more than 10,000!
Highly awarded, Thazhakkara chose to sum up his achievement thus, "None of these prizes measures up to the honour of being a part of many lives to whom I am known only by my voice."
Quite an amazing thought. [Do read his full interview here.](
