Our cop stories are intended to celebrate such moments and persons, without saying anything about the entire force. [View this email in your browser]( Kaafi Khaki... India's police have many issues. Corruption and poor performance come to the mind instantly. But the very structure of police organisations across the country seems to be deeply flawed. And while The Better India has[tried to give some answers]( for how this can be made better, we do accept that a story here and there cannot address the multitudes of issues plaguing the 'system'. But we still do try to cover as many police stories as we can. From [sheer heroics]( to moments of[high honour]( you can find a few tales on the police every week in our site. Why do we do this, especially considering the many problematic issues with the police as a whole? Here is some clarification. It is because of a philosophy that drives the entirety of The Better India - the power of the individual. We are all individuals who face an endless series of choices each day. And each decision we make - to be green, honourable, brave, or even to save a life - affects our journey. And if sufficient individuals made the 'right' choices, real change would be both sweeping and lasting - instead of a temporary flash in the pan. Our cop stories are intended to celebrate such moments and persons, without saying anything about the entire force. And we hope that such stories inspire both sides - the readers and perhaps even the cops who read our stories - to believe that a better India can found - one choice at a time. Today's example of such choices is a story of the Mumbai police, who are doing their best to honour the father of Keenan Santos - who was murdered when he tried to defend a female friend from sexual harassment. The Mumbai police ensured his father, 60-year-old Valerian Santos (pictured), is given justice through the courts, given protection when he feared for his life, and also a minor birthday party! All so that they could assure him and many others - the cops are here for you.
