From The Beginning to The End, And Beyond
We have a complicated relationship with death.
In films, we arrive dramatically at the last minute, ready to say goodbye and hear final words, even though that rarely happens in real life.
It is just one of the many elaborate rituals our cultural evolution has created to deal with death. We also build memorials (even for the unknown dead), cremate, bury or feed their remains to animals and birds--hoping that a higher power creates a new dawn beyond the dark for the departed.
Atheists symbolically mark the spots where life has departed. Some even cooked and ate the flesh--another way to keep the dead among us a little longer.
Yet biology does not care about culture. Evolution has instilled in us a strong revulsion of the dead--as carriers of disease and risk. Whatever tributes we create for âone of usâ, we avoid any contact with the body of a true unknown.
Perhaps this is why the deaths of unknown humans around us barely bother us.
Among those unknown millions, thousands remain unclaimed every day, with no hands to hold, no listening ears for their final confessions and no tears. Their only testament is the stench of rot, which spreads when the natural process of decay takes hold--a final gasp from beyond, that is deeply offensive to all but the desensitised.
This is why we must fully celebrate the better angels among us, who overcome the entirety of human, cultural and biological evolution, and give dignity to those who have no one.
[Dev Dass Goswami, a truck driver, is one such better angel.](
âMore often than not, these bodies were mangled beyond recognition. Iâd stop my vehicle, carry the bodies and carry out a proper burial. In addition to that, I started providing food and water to people I would meet during my drives through the highway,â [says Goswami]( The Better India.
He later began to feed the homeless as well, and today, runs two homes for them. We can only wonder what it takes to handle the remains of an unknown, or feed and bathe strangers. And we can salute those who do--and perhaps, if we can, volunteer or contribute to such people. [Do read his story.](
Yes, death is a dark place. But if we can look at it boldly in the face, and appeal to our better sides, [like Goswami]( we may discover the nobility inherent in all life--from the beginning to the end, and beyond.
