[View this email in your browser]( Milling for Millets It has always amazed me to see Indians rush to pay premium prices for imported 'superfoods'. For the record, healthy living is a lot more than just overdosing on one or two things Eating an avocado toast along with your sausages, Poori Sabji or biscuits for breakfast is not going to change much. (At least the avocados are home-grown - for the most part. ) If someone does want to get serious about eating better, then there is almost no need at all - except as a matter of personal taste - to buy such expensive and imported food. Whether it is quinoa, kale or açaí berries, in the Indian context, it is hard to integrate these into our daily menus. And, there is a massive ecological and economic cost to growing, packing and shipping these foods to your local supermarket from around the world. Instead, it is more responsible, as a matter of choice, to add India's homegrown superfoods to our diets. Everything from amla to moringa are staple foods in rural India and used to be so in the cities as well before trends changed. Millets held pride of place in this country, before the nutritionally reduced polished white rice and refined wheat became the 'must have'. And of course, native oils from coconut or ghee are as healthy as olive oil - though the taste is a larger factor in this case. Not only are such desi superfoods easy to add to your diet, but they also have a reduced carbon footprint and give a boost to local farmers, who can focus on diverse crops - rather than depending on the same thing.
