Plus Sculpture , Works of Art & Paintings [the saleroom] presents Sotheby's If you are unable to view this email, try the [online version.] IMPORTANT EUROPEAN FURNITURE, SCULPTURE, WORKS OF ART & PAINTINGS Sotheby's is pleased to announce the forthcoming sale of Important European Furniture, Sculpture, Works of Art & Paintings on 28 November 2016. The highlight of the auction is an exceptional pair of sofas designed in 1755 by the celebrated joiner Nicolas Heurtaut, which perfectly embody the Rocaille style that flourished at the end of the 1750s. They are a unique model, asymmetrical and with just a single-headrest, and were also known as 'chimney corners' because they were originally intended to sit either side of a fireplace. Their well-documented provenance states that they belonged to the Countess of Seran in the 18th century and the Prince of Beauvau in the 20th, before they were acquired by the famous antique dealer Jean Seligmann. The sculpture section of the sale includes a delicate marble Venus Italica by Canova designed to take the place of the Meidici Venus, which had been looted by napoleonic troops in 1802.
