Cruz in self-quarantine after interacting with coronavirus patient
Senator Ted Cruz announced Sunday that he is in self-quarantine after he shook hands with someone who later tested positive for the coronavirus. According to the [Houston Chronicle]( Cruz briefly talked with the coronavirus patient at the Conservative Political Action Conference last month in Maryland. Cruz said in a statement that health officials told him it's unlikely he has the virus, but he's self-quarantining out of an abundance of caution. "I'm not experiencing any symptoms, and I feel fine and healthy," Cruz said. "Given that the interaction was 10 days ago, that the average incubation period is 5-6 days, that the interaction was for less than a minute, and that I have no current symptoms, the medical authorities have advised me that the odds of transmission from the other individual to me were extremely low."
Number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Texas rises to 22
As of Sunday night, there are 22 known cases of coronavirus in Texas. As the [Texas Tribune]( reports in its thorough breakdown, the most recent 11 cases are people from the Houston area who were exposed during a trip to Egypt. The other half of patients also contracted the coronavirus overseas and were quarantined at the Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. Concerns over the coronavirus prompted the city of Austin to [cancel the annual South by Southwest festival]( and thousands have signed a petition calling for the cancellation of the upcoming Houston Rodeo. On Sunday, Rice University [canceled]( in-person classes and undergraduate teaching labs after an employee, part of the Egypt trip, tested positive last week.
Dallas County asks for primary recount
Dallas County apparently didn't count some ballots on Super Tuesday, prompting officials to ask for a recount of the primary results. The [Texas Tribune]( reports that Dallas County election administrator Toni Pippins-Poole filed a petition late Friday in state district court, seeking a recount after her office discovered ballots from 44 tabulating machines that were not accounted for in the the county's self-reported election results. The number of voters who checked in to cast ballots at some polling places reportedly didn't match the number of ballots received from those locations. It's unclear how many ballots were missing or how a recount might impact the primary results, if at all.
