THE STATE OF TEXAS
Whataburger wants to grow
There are few things more quintessentially Texan than the orange-and-white stripes of Whataburger, and [the San Antonio-based company is now exploring ways to spread its brand—and food—across the country.]( On Thursday, Whataburger confirmed that it had hired investment banking firm Morgan Stanley to explore options for growth, including a possible sale. Whataburger has more than 820 locations—670 of which are in Texas—and has expanded into the South and Southwest. On social media, fans expressed hope that Whataburger would stay true to its Lone Star roots.
Remain in Mexico policy takes toll on shelters and immigration officials President Trump’s “remain in Mexico” immigration policy, which forces thousands of migrants to wait in Mexico while their cases are heard, [is meant to slow the flow of migrants crossing into the country](. It may be working, but in a cruel way. As the number of migrants seeking asylum continues to grow, organizers in Mexico say it’s becoming increasingly difficult to find enough lodging. Migrants are also facing obstacles obtaining permits to work in Mexico, because many of them hand over important documents to U.S. officials as they wait for their hearings. Reverend Fierro Garcia, the director of a Ciudad Juaréz shelter, says it’s only going to get worse. "Its like a glass of water that’s going to overflow and spill onto everything. Here it’s like a dam. The dam is going to overflow."
Texas Senate passes “born alive” abortion bill All 19 of the state's Republican senators and two Democrats voted to pass House Bill 16, which would [require doctors to provide medical care to babies born alive after a failed abortion attempt.]( Though such cases are extremely rare, supporters say the legislation was necessary to promote a “culture of life.” Doctors who fail to provide medical treatment could face a sentence of two to ten years in prison and could also be sued by the Texas attorney general. The House will have to decide whether to approve a minor change to the bill before it goes to the governor.
