THE STATE OF TEXAS
Texas Cowboys suspended for six years
Following the fatal injuries of a Texas Cowboys member last year, an investigation into hazing at a retreat that took place the night before has resulted in the [six-year suspension of the UT Austin spirit group.]( The group will also have to comply with a two-year probationary period following their reinstatement when the six years are up. The university determined that the group violated rules that prohibit hazing, alcohol misconduct, and behavior threatening health or safety. One member on the retreat was coerced into biting the head off of a hamster. The Cowboys can accept the sanction, appeal, or request a formal hearing.
County commissioner apologizes for saying judge should speak English During a press conference, Harris County judge Lina Hidalgo was updating residents on the recent Deer Park fire in English and Spanish. But just minutes into her remarks, Chambers county commissioner Mark Tice commented on the livestream, [“She is a joke. English this is not Mexico.”]( Tice later doubled down and told the Houston Chronicle, “It’s real simple. This is the United States. Speak English,” though he later apologized to Judge Hidalgo and the Hispanic community by saying he realized that the response could be interpreted in a derogatory manner.
UT Austin blacklists Airbnb
On Tuesday, [UT employees and graduate students were told that they could not use state money to stay in Airbnbs.]( The news comes after the state blacklisted Airbnb for allegedly boycotting Israel by removing all 200 of its listings in the West Bank due in part to safety risks. The company says it does not boycott Israel. Both students and professors are hard hit by the news as they often book Airbnbs to save money while traveling to conferences. In a statement, UT Austin president Greg Fenves said, "The state of Texas prohibits agencies from doing business with companies that boycott Israel, as designated by the comptroller ... Economic boycotts that target Israel unfairly single out one nation and shut down the free exchange of ideas that we value at UT."
