QUOTE OF THE DAY
“Our goal at the same time is to make sure that if there are criminals who are dangerous, who pose a threat to a law enforcement officer or the community, we’re going to get them off the street and keep them off the street.”
—Governor Greg Abbott, who laid out a proposal for the Texas Legislature [to reform the state's bail system.]( His proposed legislation, the Damon Allen Act, was named after a Department of Public Safety trooper who was gunned down on Thanksgiving Day last year. The suspect in that slaying, who had a history of attacking officers, was out on a $15,500 bond.

MEANWHILE, IN TEXAS...
Misattributed
On Tuesday, Governor Greg Abbott tweeted a quote attributed to Winston Churchill: "The fascists of the future will call themselves anti-fascists." The problem? Churchill didn't say that. More than 2,000 people responded to the tweet, which was later removed. Abbott later doubled down on the mistake. "What I tweeted was a sentiment that I had . . . If no one else said it, attribute the quote to me because it's what I believe in."[via [D]([allas Morning News](]

THE STATE OF TEXAS
Gator Fraud
New Braunfels [police are assuring the public]( that a photo of an alligator swimming in either the Comal or Guadalupe river is a hoax. "A remote-controlled alligator head was used to create photos and videos that you may have seen on Facebook and other social media sites," the department said on its Facebook page. Investigators determined that the hoax was unintentional, but did not explain why anyone would place a remote controlled gator head in the water and photograph it. "We hope this eases any fears," the department wrote.

Shrine Expansion
The house that Darrell Royal built may soon be getting bigger. The University of Texas regents are expected to vote on a [proposed $140 million expansion]( of Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium on Thursday. Specific details of the expansion are sparse, but the project has a proposed start date of 2019 and would be completed by 2021. Among the improvements will be new suites, clubs, and coaches' offices. UT has already raised $30 million towards the project and is expected to raise $125 million in total to fund it. The rest of the money will come from bonds that will be paid through premium seating and ticket sales. It remains unclear how the project will affect the stadium's capacity, which currently is listed as 100,119.

Worst for Women
Two political action committees called AmericanBridge and Ultraviolet PACs listed fifteen members of Congress that they have singled out as being [the "worst for women."]( Two Texans are on the list: U.S. Senator Ted Cruz and U.S. Representative Pete Sessions. Both are Republicans and both are now locked in tight races for re-election. Their assessment, according to their website, is based on congressional voting records on a handful of issues, including taxation, the Affordable Care Act, and abortion. The group says Cruz has voted in line with President Trump 91 percent of the time while Sessions has a 98 percent voting record.
