[READ STORY]( ELECTION WATCH 2024 WITH ALEX [Alex-Samuels](   I’m Alexandra Samuels, a senior editor with Texas Monthly. We’re officially in my favorite time of year—the thick of the general election. Here’s what that means for you: We’re about to get a boatload of new polls. For tips on how to interpret them, keep an 👀 on our website this week. You’ll also probably see a wave of political ads flooding your TV screens, and, as an added bonus, we’ll be publishing more regular “[Answer Me This](” videos. (Remember, if you have an idea, email me directly at asamuels@texasmonthly.com and you may just see your query answered in one of our next posts.) This week, I’m updating you on a race that I’m following very closely this election cycle—the U.S. Senate contest between Ted Cruz and Colin Allred. Some things have changed since Kamala Harris became the Democratic presidential nominee, so let’s get up to speed. 📊Most surveys (I count at least five new polls in the last month alone) have Cruz leading by low-to-mid single digits, but some early predictors suggest that the Senate race could be a toss-up. Here are the highlights: [The University of Houston and Texas Southern University]( have Cruz up by two percentage points; [ActiVote]( has him up by ten; [Quantas Polls and News]( has him leading Allred by seven points; the [Texas Politics Project at the University of Texas at Austin]( has Cruz up by eight; and [Emerson College]( has Cruz edging Allred by four points. 🫏 In Texas Monthly’s [latest story]( on the U.S. Senate race, we were candid about Allred’s bizarre campaign strategy. Since then, however, Allred has seemingly made it a point to be more visible. The Democrat spent much of last week in the Rio Grande Valley and later made stops in Houston and Austin. He didn’t make any news, per se. But during his panel at the Texas Tribune Festival, he [defended]( his campaign strategy. Oh! And former Wyoming representative Liz Cheney [endorsed]( Allred’s Senate bid; she also said her father, former vice president Dick Cheney, will be voting for Harris in the November election. Texas Monthly’s news and politics team will continue covering this race. Check back here for new (and newsworthy) information on the race, and don’t forget to keep an eye on [texasmonthly.com](.
