And She's Ready to Make Trouble.]( Jennifer Lozano—nicknamed “la Traviesa,” or “the Troublemaker”—grew from an overweight, bullied kid into a history-making boxer. [READ STORY](   ELECTION WATCH WITH ALEX   I’m Alexandra Samuels, a senior editor with Texas Monthly. As a reminder, you’ll see me in this newsletter periodically discussing all things elections and Lege-related. I wanted to share some notes since I last saw you all—er, a lot has happened. ❓The big question on my mind: Will Kamala Harris at the top of the presidential ticket have a noticeable effect on statewide and down-ballot races in Texas? Unfortunately, we’re in that wait-and-see portion of Harris’s honeymoon period with the press and don’t have up-to-date, head-to-head polling of Harris versus former President Trump. 🧠What we know: As we wait for those statewide polls to trickle in, here’s where we’re at nationally: In short, the data we have suggests that Harris does better than Trump with nonwhite voters, women, and voters younger than forty. But Trump has an edge among suburban voters, white voters without college degrees, men, and Republican-leaning independents. ⌛ While we wait, though: I’ll be keeping an eye on both Harris and President Biden’s respective visits to the Lone Star State. Harris has been to Texas thrice in the past month—once in Dallas and twice in Houston. Biden, meanwhile, was in Austin on Monday where he discussed his plans to overhaul the Supreme Court. Again, it’s too early to tell if these visits signal a bigger investment in Texas, which has been trending toward Democrats since 2000. In non-national politics news, here are some of my favorite stories of the week so far: ● [The Texas Tribune visualized new polling]( that shows Texas adults support a school voucher program. ● [KUT News’ Lauren McGaughy received autopsy reports]( suggesting that hot prison temperatures contributed to three deaths last year. ● [A recap of a Lege hearing this week, from the Associated Press](, where lawmakers grilled CenterPoint executives about ongoing power failures amid Hurricane Beryl. �— [Fast Company finally uncovered]( the business side of the University of Austin. ● And there are a lot of earthquakes happening across Texas.
