[READ STORY]( INTRODUCING Election Watch 2024 With Alex Iâm Alexandra Samuels, a senior editor with Texas Monthly, and youâll see me pop up in this newsletter periodically discussing all things elections and Lege-related. In this first blurb, Iâd love to shamelessly plug our latest Answer Me This [video](, where I uncovered the five biggest out-of-state billionaires trying to mess with Texas. Here are some of the highlights: The donors: Some of the names youâll see in this clip, like George Soros, might not be too shocking, but you might be scratching your head wondering why the co-founder and executive chairman of Netflix is spending big money here in the Lone Star State. What do they want?: Well, save for Soros, they mostly want to mess with our education system. A lot of the biggest donors are committed to seeing Texas pass a contentious school-voucher program, which would divert money from public schools to private ones. The bottom line: Of course, a want for a voucher program isnât the only thing driving donors this cycle. Other big donors appear interested in either legalized casino gambling or ensuring incumbentsâon both sides of the aisleâkeep their seats in the Lege. For all of this and more, watch our short clip [here](. Not a visual person? Donât worry, we also have [a write-up]( on our website. (And if you want to scour through recent campaign finance donations yourself, Chris Tackett, a campaign finance expert in Fort Worth, [has a gorgeous widget designed]( for that specifically).
